The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7,500 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts. The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) Applicant Investigation Unit (AIU) is seeking (5) part-time Investigators to perform a critical role in conducting comprehensive background investigations of Correction Officer candidates. Under general supervision, with considerable latitude for independent judgment, Investigators will utilize a combination of traditional investigative methods and advanced digital research techniques to evaluate candidate suitability. Responsibilities include conducting investigative interviews; performing field visits; reviewing digital forums, identifying undisclosed information; verifying the authenticity of submitted documentation; and conducting research through authorized databases and internet-based sources. Investigators will analyze information for indicators relevant to departmental standards, prepare detailed and accurate investigative reports and maintain investigative records with strict adherence to confidentiality requirements. The ideal candidate will be highly organized, detail-oriented, technologically proficient, and capable of exercising sound judgment while supporting the AIU’s mission to ensure the integrity and effectiveness of the Correction Officer hiring process.
