Job Summary Associate Health Physics Technician This is the entry level into the Health Physics Technician series. Incumbents will participate in classroom and practical training, maintaining acceptable academic standards throughout the program. Employees new to the role will learn the basic concepts of radiological protection and perform frisker source checks and routine decontamination procedures. Collects routine radiological air samples, issues respiratory protection and Health Physics instrumentation, and performs laundry facility duties. As training program progresses, performs additional routine radiological surveys, sampling and analysis to determine radiation hazards. Documents results to ensure compliance with established procedures and limits. Performs operability checks of various Health Physics instrumentation. Performs assigned duties in support of the Emergency Response Team. Later in the training program, employees monitor and control internal/external personnel exposure, contamination, radioactive materials and waste. Learns to perform more specialized radiological surveys and provides Health Physics job coverage for radiological work activities. Additional duties will include installing and maintaining ventilation units for airborne radioactivity and performing decontamination of personnel, small tools and contaminated areas. Health Physics Technician The ANSI-qualified Health Physics Technician provides radiological protection for the health and safety of the general public and employees from the hazards of radiation, through the conducting of surveys, sampling and compliance with regulations, standards and procedures. Provides job coverage for radiological concerns during routine and special plant maintenance activities. Performs routine and random radiation surveys (including personnel exposure, equipment contamination, air samples) to assess radiological conditions. Prepares and monitors Radiation Work Permits. Senior Health Physics Technician The ANSI-qualified Senior Health Physics Technician provides radiological protection for the health and safety of the general public and employees from the hazards of radiation, through the conducting of surveys, sampling and compliance with regulations, standards and procedures. Provides job coverage for radiological concerns during routine and special plant maintenance activities. Performs routine and random radiation surveys (including personnel exposure, equipment contamination, air samples) to assess radiological conditions. Prepares and monitors Radiation Work Permits. Inspects, calibrates and maintains radiological protection instrumentation and sampling equipment. Provides technical expertise and support to all radiological protection program elements. Evaluates regulatory and industry standards for applicability to radiological control activities. Prepares, analyzes, surveys, packages and ships radioactive material and waste. Performs Bioassay evaluations and follow-up monitoring activities. Provides guidance to lower level Health Physics Technicians as needed.

Requirements

  • 0-2 years directly related experience (Associate Health Physics Technician)
  • 2+ years directly related experience (completion of Health Physics Technician Development Program or equivalent knowledge and experience) (Health Physics Technician)
  • 5+ years directly related experience (including completion of Health Physics Technician Development Program or equivalent knowledge and experience) (Senior Health Physics Technician)
  • Successful completion of the TECH test (Associate Health Physics Technician)
  • Good math skills
  • Strong math and analytical skills
  • Good attention to detail and ability to recognize situations that require prompt action
  • Good teamwork skills
  • Must be able to fulfill duties as directed for Station Emergency Plan to include obtaining and maintaining required ERO/SERO qualifications, participating in ERO/SERO exercises and drills, and verifying availability through response to ERO/SERO call-in drills.
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Must obtain and maintain required ERO/SERO qualifications.

  • Regulatory Guidance, 1.5 for Radiation Protection Technicians Education requirements: High school diploma
  • Related experience which shall include 2 yrs; Nuclear power plant experience 1 yr.
  • Note: In regard to "related experience" for radiation protection technicians, 2000 working hours is acceptable as representing one year of experience. There is no expectation of a minimum timeframe for accumulating these 2000 hours (e.g., not less than 40 weeks), nor is there a limit applied to the amount of hours that can be credited in a week. However, no more than 2000 hours can credited toward related experience for radiation protection technicians in any one calendar year.
  • REFER to ANSI/ANS-3.1-2014, Section 4.1, for guidance on alternatives to degree requirements, experience substitution for education, and alternatives to experience (not allowed for Special requirements)
  • Note: Dominion Energy minimum requirements may exceed stated ANSI standards and candidates must meet the Dominion Energy minimum requirements.
