Oura is seeking an experienced Associate General Counsel, Senior Director of Intellectual Property to serve as the senior operational and people leader for the IP function, partnering closely with the Deputy General Counsel, SVP of IP, Risk & Compliance. This is a rare opportunity to play a senior leadership role in IP at a company where intellectual property is deeply valued, actively leveraged, and thoughtfully integrated into business strategy. The role offers significant ownership, visibility, and influence, along with the opportunity to help shape how innovation is protected and advanced as Oura continues to grow. In this role, you will lead execution of Oura’s IP strategy, translate strategic priorities into scalable programs, and manage day-to-day oversight of the company’s global IP portfolio. You will be responsible for ensuring excellence across patent, trademark, copyright, litigation, enforcement, and innovation enablement, while providing clear, practical counsel to technical and business teams. This role is ideal for a senior IP leader who enjoys combining hands-on legal judgment with team leadership, and who thrives in close partnership with executive leadership. The AGC, Senior Director will manage and develop a global IP team, including the Senior IP Manager (Finland) and Senior IP & Marketing Counsel (U.S.), and will work cross-functionally with engineering, science, product, and marketing teams. This is a remote US role.

Requirements

  • 10-15+ years of intellectual property experience, including significant in-house or top-tier law firm experience supporting technology companies
  • JD from an accredited law school; active membership in at least one U.S. state bar
  • Registration to practice before the USPTO
  • Deep experience with patent prosecution strategy and IP litigation management
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams, set strategy, and partner cross-functionally with technical and business leaders
  • Strong judgment, executive presence, and ability to operate effectively in a fast-moving environment

Nice To Haves

  • Technical degree in engineering or a related scientific field relevant to wearable technology, such as electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, physics, or materials science
  • Experience in wearables, consumer electronics, medical devices, or data-driven technology
  • Experience with global IP portfolios and international enforcement
  • Experience building or scaling IP functions at growth-stage or category-leading companies

Responsibilities

  • Lead day-to-day management of Oura’s global patent portfolio, ensuring alignment with strategic objectives
  • Oversee invention harvesting, disclosure review, filing decisions, and prosecution strategy with outside counsel
  • Drive high-quality collaboration between legal, engineering, science, and product teams
  • Support M&A teams in IP diligence and valuation for new company targets
  • Manage IP litigation, enforcement, and dispute resolution matters in coordination with senior leadership and outside counsel
  • Support enforcement and licensing initiatives
  • Ensure consistent, disciplined approaches to enforcement across jurisdictions
  • Oversee execution of trademark and copyright strategies, including clearance, prosecution, and enforcement
  • Partner with marketing and brand teams to support product launches and growth while managing IP risk
  • Lead invention programs, invention harvesting sessions, and company-wide innovation initiatives (e.g., hack-weeks)
  • Promote IP awareness and best practices through education and practical guidance for internal teams
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing, globally distributed IP team
  • Manage outside counsel relationships, budgets, and performance
  • Build scalable IP operations, processes, and reporting to support growth
