Growing together. The Associate General Counsel will join UnitedHealth Group’s Corporate Legal organization within the Data Governance function, supporting the Data Transactions team. This team serves as subject matter experts on data use, data licensing, AI use, and related privacy considerations, with a primary focus on supporting Optum Life Sciences. In this role, the attorney will lead complex contract drafting and negotiation efforts for data licensing and research services engagements, working closely with internal stakeholders and external customers in the life sciences industry. You’ll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges. For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week. This role is part of the Data Transactions Counsel Group at UnitedHealth Group and supports a variety of business groups that consume, generate, and aggregate data and develop data analytics and research projects Working with business team members as an active partner to develop strategic relationships via legal counsel and contract negotiation Providing legal advice for developing business models as technology, regulations, and markets evolve Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating business agreements and transactions, including inbound and outbound technology licensing, data access, IP development, and similar initiatives Advising the business on regulatory, data privacy, cybersecurity, data governance, AI, competition/antitrust, and related matters Applying business and legal judgment to proposed transactions, relationships, and other issues requiring legal or compliance review You’ll be rewarded and recognized for your performance in an environment that will challenge you and give you clear direction on what it takes to succeed in your role as well as provide development for other roles you may be interested in.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate degree and license to practice law (in at least one U.S. jurisdiction)
  • 5+ years of legal experience gained at a medium or large law firm, or equivalent role in-house at a corporation
  • Demonstrated experience drafting, reviewing, and negotiating complex commercial contracts
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of contract and regulatory law
  • Demonstrated understanding of business problems related to assigned legal projects
  • Demonstrated well-developed written and verbal and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate and determine appropriate legal course of action to meet business needs
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain rapport with superiors, peers, and external company contacts

Nice To Haves

  • Background supporting regulated industries and/or healthcare experience
  • Working familiarity with software or data licensing deals
  • Working familiarity with AI tools (e.g., algorithms, models) used in the industry and the associated regulatory, IP, security and other implications of AI use
  • Working familiarity with contract management software used for day-to-day task organization
  • Demonstrated proficiency at managing complex negotiations across a spectrum of customers (small to large entities through the life sciences, healthcare and related industries)
