About The Position

The Associate Engineer performs professional engineering work in both field and office settings. This role involves supervising junior and assistant engineers, technicians, inspectors, surveyors, and other related personnel on engineering projects. The specific functions may vary by assignment, but generally include preparing engineering designs, drawings, specifications, and cost estimates. The Associate Engineer also provides engineering support to operations staff, conducts studies, analyzes and resolves problems to ensure compliance with regulatory and performance standards, and reviews plans and specifications from staff, consultants, and contractors. A key aspect of the role is the supervision of staff, including interviewing, selecting, training, monitoring, evaluating, and counseling. Additionally, the position involves preparing and reviewing technical reports, bid documents, and conducting meetings and presentations.

Requirements

  • Three (3) years of verifiable professional engineering experience of which two (2) years of professional experience equivalent to the City & County of San Francisco Class 5203 Assistant Engineer or higher
  • Possession of a current Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California in Civil, Traffic, or Transportation Engineering
  • Candidates licensed in other states who otherwise meet the minimum requirements of this announcement, but do not possess the required California license, may file for this examination, and if successful, will be placed under waiver on the resulting eligible list until the required California license is presented
  • A Masters degree in Transportation (Traffic) Engineering disciplines may substitute for (1) one year of work experience in the environmental specialty
  • A Ph.D. in Transportation (Traffic) Engineering disciplines may substitute for 2 (two) years of work experience in the environmental specialty
  • Some positions may require a valid driver license

Responsibilities

  • preparing engineering designs, drawings and specifications
  • preparing cost and quantity estimates for necessary labor, materials and equipment associated with construction, contractors, suppliers, installation, repair, restoration and maintenance
  • providing engineering support to operations staff
  • reviewing existing conditions and conducting studies of processes by identifying, obtaining and analyzing samples and data
  • analyzing and resolving problems to ensure compliance with regulatory and performance standards and specifications
  • supervising the preparation of detailed engineering drawings, specifications and calculations
  • assigning and reviewing the work of subordinate staff and consultants
  • determining resources necessary to complete assigned work
  • reviewing plans, permit applications and specifications developed by staff, consultants and contractors
  • verifying quantities, dimensions, safety requirements, and quality of work for engineering projects
  • preparing and supervising the preparation of a wide variety of technical engineering reports and other documentation
  • interviewing, selecting, training, monitoring, evaluating and counseling staff
  • preparing a variety of bid documents
  • reviewing and analyzing bids
  • conducting meetings and making presentations
  • Performs other related duties as required
