About The Position

We are seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented Associate Director of Government Affairs to join our team. This position will play a critical role in managing government affairs for three states. This position will report to the Director of Government Affairs. This position is located in our NY or DC office, and will adhere to a hybrid work schedule (work in office from Monday to Wednesday, and work remotely from Thursday to Friday).

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in political science, public policy, or a related field. A master’s degree is a plus.
  • 5+ years of experience in government affairs, legislative work, or advocacy, with at least some experience in both state and federal policy arenas.
  • Strong knowledge of legislative and regulatory processes at both state and federal levels.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to craft persuasive messages and briefing materials.
  • Demonstrated experience building and maintaining relationships with policymakers and stakeholders.
  • Willingness to travel periodically within the Northeast region.
  • A proactive and solutions-oriented approach to advocacy and problem-solving.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual in Spanish is a plus.
  • Experience using legislative tracking tools and CRM systems is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead state and local campaigns in 3–4 states, with autonomy to develop and execute strategic and tactical plans, in collaboration with manager and Senior Staff.
  • Manage execution of federal campaign strategies in states with federal targets, coordinating with regional pods and facilitating stakeholder engagement.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key municipalities in each state, recruiting them into Mayors Against Illegal Guns where appropriate, and deploying resources to advance local, non-legislative gun violence prevention efforts.
  • Cultivate partnerships with stakeholders at the state and local levels—including partner organizations, law enforcement, elected officials, coalitions, networks, and influencers—to build grassroots and grasstops capacity.
  • Develop deep expertise in firearm policy to effectively advance or defeat proposed policies.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of each state’s legislative agenda and political environment, with a focus on advancing gun violence prevention legislation and related interventions.
  • Foster collaboration between state, federal, and local leaders to align campaigns at all levels of government.
  • Lead state-specific, cross-functional team meetings to ensure strong project management of campaigns, including municipal non-legislative goals and federal targets.
  • Represent the Government Affairs team on issue-specific or long-term campaign teams.
  • Hire, oversee, and manage state-based consultants.
  • Establish and manage contracts with vendors and consultants.
