Emory College of Arts and Sciences (Emory College), founded in 1836, is Emory University’s primary undergraduate division with more than 5,700 students. Its intensive liberal arts curriculum is backed by all the resources of one of the world's top research universities. Emory College plays a critical role in supporting and expanding the liberal arts throughout the University and its nine undergraduate and professional schools. The Office for Undergraduate Education (OUE) stewards the academic experience of undergraduates in Emory College. It promotes academic excellence by providing leadership and support across the College, both curricular and co-curricular. The OUE advances the vision of Emory College by collaborating with its faculty and Emory University partners to deliver a transformative liberal arts education. In this endeavor, it co-creates academic experiences that enable each Emory College student to reach their full potential and contribute meaningfully to Emory University’s mission to “create, preserve, teach and apply knowledge in the service of humanity.” The Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education: Academic Affairs and Faculty Partnerships in the Office for Undergraduate Education (OUE) is a key contributor to the overall academic success and experience of undergraduates and faculty in Emory University’s College of Arts and Sciences (Emory College). The Associate Dean is responsible for providing strategic leadership for undergraduate academic affairs, including the effective delivery of the undergraduate curriculum in Emory College. They will focus their efforts on the Arts and Humanities disciplines, providing critical administrative and curricular support for faculty and departments in those fields. They will work to develop and implement effective academic policies and assessment processes, as well as provide expert counsel to faculty and departments on matters of enrollment, assessing and advancing the curriculum, and developing new majors, minors, and other academic programs. The Associate Dean will also provide key support to departments and academic advising around specific and often complex curricular, faculty, and individual student issues. Additional responsibilities include providing collaborative oversight of Emory’s General Education Requirements (GERs) and First-Year Seminars (FYS). They may also provide senior level leadership and support for the high-functioning Emory College Honor Council team. The Associate Dean will work closely with College leadership to strengthen and sustain Emory College’s liberal arts curriculum, as well as support curricular and co-curricular innovation. Working in collaboration with other senior leaders in the College and across the OUE, including the Faculty Divisional Deans, the Associate Dean will work to create and implement programs, policies, processes, and initiatives that advance the undergraduate academic experience, supporting both students and faculty in their pursuit of excellence in the liberal arts at Emory University.

Requirements

  • A PhD.
  • At least five years of progressive leadership experience in higher education, including in a supervisory role, with significant experience in undergraduate education required.
  • At least five years of experience providing support to faculty across the disciplines.
  • Experience with curricular design, academic policies and best practices, and accreditation processes required.
  • Strategic mindset; able to advance creative solutions and/or new ideas in collaboration with wide-ranging educational communities.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, along with a background in strategic planning and curricular assessment. Experience with student and curricular data management systems and curricular planning tools required.
  • Demonstrated experience in undergraduate teaching and advising/mentoring required.
  • Commitment to holistic student and faculty support in a liberal arts environment essential.

Nice To Haves

  • A PhD or relevant terminal degree, with evidence of research experience and pedagogical training in an Arts or Humanities discipline.
  • Six – 10 years of progressive leadership experience in higher education, with significant experience in undergraduate education required.
  • Six – 10 years of experience partnering with faculty across the disciplines, with a focus on the Arts and Humanities.
  • Experience supporting Honor Code/Honor Council processes and procedures preferred.
  • Experience supporting Arts and Humanities grant processes, including those focused on advancing cohort-based educational models and course-based and/or co-curricular undergraduate research experiences preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides mission-critical curricular and co-curricular support to all College faculty, and targeted support to faculty, Directors of Undergraduate Studies, and department chairs in all Arts and Humanities departments in Emory College, as well as the Emory Writing Program; provision includes academic planning, policy interpretation and support, assessment, and course enrollment management, as well as orientation and ongoing educational programming/training for Directors of Undergraduate Studies, new faculty and department chairs.
  • Serves as primary liaison to Arts and Humanities departments, chairs and faculty (approximately 21 departments and programs); assists College and departmental leadership with enrollment management.
  • In consultation with College leadership and faculty governing bodies, develops, executes and maintains undergraduate academic policies and best practices in support of excellence in the liberal arts, as well as regularly auditing and revising policies and processes to avoid creating unnecessary burdens for students and faculty.
  • In partnership with the OUE Academic Affairs leadership team serves as a primary subject expert on academic policies, procedures, and best practices.
  • Provides critical cross-functional support within the OUE for academic advising, academic support resources, and strategic curricular initiatives designed to improve student success and retention across Arts and Humanities fields.
  • Provides ad hoc support to academic advising and its leadership, particularly with complex student and instructional issues.
  • Guides efforts in curricular development, assessment of academic programs, and ensuring adherence to accreditation standards.
  • Works collaboratively to address academic issues and concerns and develop strategies to improve student outcomes, including retention and graduation.
  • Serves as key liaison between Emory College and Emory’s Oxford College, Goizueta Business School, and the Woodruff School of Nursing, as well as other key campus partners including the University Registrar.
  • Provides collaborative thought-leadership on best practices around artificial intelligence as it relates to teaching, learning, and academic integrity, including its impacts on the Honor Council.
  • Represents the College by serving on key university-wide committees and other decision-making bodies; supports faculty governance, including serving as ex officio leadership for key faculty governance committees.
  • Works collaboratively with campus partners within the OUE, the College and across the institution, including those who support student engagement, student success, and other campus partners to ensure success for all student populations.
  • Supervises academic affairs professional staff and ensures productivity and outputs of key curricular committees in the College.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Senior Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education.
