About The Position

The Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences provides visionary, strategic, and operational leadership for the largest undergraduate and most academically diverse college within the University. The Dean leads the transformation of undergraduate education in the liberal arts and sciences while expanding innovative graduate programs that respond to workforce needs and emerging societal challenges. Working collaboratively with faculty, department chairs, university leadership, and external partners, the Dean advances academic excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service; strengthens interdisciplinary collaboration across the university; and develops new programs that prepare students for meaningful careers and graduate study. The Dean is responsible for strategic planning, resource allocation, faculty development, student success initiatives, and the cultivation of partnerships that enhance the College’s academic reputation and impact. The Dean ensures alignment with the University’s mission and strategic priorities while fostering an environment that values innovation, collaboration, academic rigor, and community engagement. The Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences must demonstrate the ability to lead academic transformation in a rapidly changing higher education environment. Requirements

  • A PhD in a field within the arts or sciences currently represented at the University (or in a field that could reasonably be developed within the College).
  • Distinguished record of teaching, research, and service
  • Significant experience in academic administration
  • Strong leadership, communication, and budgeting skills

Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership and Academic Innovation Provide visionary leadership for the College of Arts and Sciences, advancing a bold academic agenda that strengthens the relevance and impact of liberal arts and sciences education in the 21st century. Lead transformation of undergraduate education through innovative curriculum design, experiential learning, and interdisciplinary programs. Lead efforts for program review, modernization, and market-informed program development as tools for achieving transformational reform. Align academic programs with workforce needs, graduate study pathways, and emerging fields. Promote faculty innovation in teaching, research, and community engagement. Develop a forward-looking strategic plan that positions the College for long-term growth and distinction.
  • Academic Quality and Faculty Development Promote excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service consistent with the mission and values of the University. Support faculty success through mentoring, professional development, and research support. Encourage interdisciplinary scholarship and collaborative teaching initiatives. Strengthen the integration of mission, service learning, and community engagement within academic programs.
  • Program Development and Enrollment Growth Lead the development and expansion of high-demand academic programs. Drive the creation of new undergraduate, graduate and interdisciplinary programs in the arts and sciences. Identify emerging academic opportunities aligned with workforce trends. Collaborate with enrollment management to support student recruitment, retention, and completion. Strengthen pathways from undergraduate study to graduate education and professional careers.
  • Collaborative Leadership and Institutional Partnership Serve as a collaborative leader within the University and across the broader community. Partner with other colleges and units to develop interdisciplinary initiatives. Work closely with university leadership to advance institutional priorities. Build partnerships with industry, community organizations, and other academic institutions. Represent the College in external partnerships and professional networks.
  • Accreditation, Assessment, and Academic Governance Ensure academic quality, compliance, and continuous improvement. Maintain compliance with regional accreditation standards and program-specific requirements. Promote data-informed decision making and program assessment. Support shared governance and transparent academic decision-making processes.
  • Curriculum Leadership and Academic Policy Guide the development and continuous improvement of curriculum. Provide oversight of undergraduate and graduate curricular processes. Foster innovative pedagogical practices, including digital learning and emerging technologies. Support interdisciplinary programs and curricular innovation.
  • Fiscal Stewardship and Resource Management Provide responsible oversight of the College’s financial and human resources. Manage the College budget strategically to support program growth and academic priorities. Align resources with enrollment goals and institutional priorities. Identify opportunities for external funding, grants, and philanthropic support.
  • External Engagement and Advancement Promote the visibility and impact of the College. Engage alumni, donors, and community partners to support program development and student opportunities. Advocate for the value of liberal arts and sciences education. Support fundraising and partnership initiatives that advance the College.
