About The Position

The Associate Dean of the College of Health and Social Sciences provides senior-level academic and administrative leadership in support of college operations, strategic initiatives, and student success. Reporting to the Dean, the Associate Dean oversees curriculum management, enrollment planning, faculty and staff support, student services, and fiscal coordination across multiple academic departments and programs. The role represents the College in university-wide governance and administrative functions, exercises delegated authority in academic and student matters, and supervises professional and administrative staff in support of instructional quality, compliance, and operational effectiveness.

Requirements

  • Hold a tenured position at SFSU with a PhD, EdD or a terminal degree from an accredited institution in a field or discipline relevant to the CHSS.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines, work within timelines, and communicate clearly and in a timely manner
  • Analytical judgement and attention to detail

  • Previous experience in a leadership position at SFSU, [e.g., department chair, program director or similar role] in a CHSS component program/department (preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Develop an understanding of all aspects of the university and CHSS, roles of faculty and staff members, departments and programs, to create an inclusive community, and enhance communication and operations
  • Support the Dean through confidential brainstorming, problem solving, scenario building, and personnel discussions
  • Represent the Dean at all executive level meetings when Dean is unable to attend
  • Represent the Dean and/or CHSS in university and community events and activities, and to donors
  • Attend CHSS Chairs’ Council and Associate Deans’ Council meetings
  • Host all-college meetings, fall opening, and town halls
  • Work closely with the Dean’s office, including the College fiscal officer
  • Supervise, support, and evaluate CHSS staff members (direct reports), including academic resource coordinator, office coordinator, and SOAR staff
  • Oversee CHSS task forces, committees and Academic Senate elections and/or appointments
  • Miscellaneous duties in support of the Dean and the College
  • Work with the College fiscal officer and assist in managing the CHSS fiscal budget
  • Assist CHSS staff with lecturer instructional budget and class schedules under the oversight of the Dean
  • Review and approval of class schedule requests for both the regular university and College of Professional & Global Education (CPaGE)
  • Understand and review faculty workloads, instructional costs, and student demand, and how these factors influence scheduling and resource allocation decisions
  • Collaborate with academic departments to ensure efficient and student-centered course scheduling
  • Serve as a member of the CHSS Budget Advisory Committee
  • Oversee and work with CHSS staff to monitor enrollment targets, FTES, and daily course enrollment data
  • Consult with relevant departments on course enrollments, low-enrolled courses, sections consolidation, and cancellations
  • Supervise, support, and evaluate staff members working in the CHSS Curriculum Support and Development group
  • Advise chairs on departmental or curricular changes to advance student retention and graduation
  • Oversee development of new degree programs for CHSS (certificates, minors, majors, etc.)
  • Approve new or revised course proposals
  • Approve the College listing in the University Bulletin
  • Approve withdrawal, maximum-unit, grade exceptions, waiver of CHSS regulations, and grade change petitions
  • Work with chairs and faculty to resolve RD grades
  • Resolve student grievances and act as a mediator in resolving grade appeal disputes
  • Serve as Hearing Officer for the Office of Student Conduct in the Division of SAEM
  • Oversight of CHSS Hood nominations and selection process (graduate and undergraduate)
  • Host Dean Lists celebrations
  • Serve as CHSS coordinator for university and the College recruitment events
  • Organize and oversee CHSS undergraduate research and creative works showcase
  • Administer or facilitate awarding of student scholarships and travel awards
  • Serve as Primary Investigator for SOAR/TRIO U.S. Department of Education grant and as Supervisor of SOAR/TRIO Program in CHSS
  • Hold Associate Dean office hours
  • Assist Dean with CHSS Faculty Development support
  • Assist Dean with lecturer faculty meetings
  • Provide support for program self-studies for accreditation and cycle of program reviews
  • Provide support for Retention, Tenure, and Promotion processes and revisions to department RTP criteria
  • Administer or facilitate awarding of Annual CHSS Faculty and Staff awards
  • Coordinate CHSS faculty marshals, ambassadors and faculty attendance for university graduation and/or honors ceremonies (undergraduate and graduate)
  • Organize and oversee fall and spring lecture series events (e.g. Dr. John Paul De Cecco lecture)
