About The Position

The Associate Dean for Nursing Affairs serves as the chief operating officer for nursing academic matters within the College of Nursing and Health Professions. This role provides strategic leadership to ensure high-quality educational experiences that prepare competent nursing professionals to meet the healthcare needs of Texas and the nation. The Associate Dean reports to the Dean and collaborates closely with faculty, staff, and students, alongside the Assistant Deans for Undergraduate and Graduate Nursing Studies and the College Leadership Team, to support the mission and goals of the School of Nursing, the College, and the University.

Requirements

  • Doctorate in Nursing or a related field.
  • BSN or MSN in nursing.
  • Minimum of 5 years of teaching experience in a nationally accredited nursing program.
  • At least 3 years of administrative experience in nursing education.
  • Minimum of 3 years of clinical nursing experience.
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Texas.

Responsibilities

  • Academic Program Leadership: Oversee the administration and continuous improvement of undergraduate (BSN), graduate (MSN), and doctoral (DNP) nursing programs, ensuring alignment with institutional goals and national standards.
  • Lead strategic planning and evaluation initiatives to enhance academic quality, innovation, and responsiveness to healthcare trends.
  • Coordinate curriculum development, implementation, evaluation, and revision, ensuring compliance with accreditation requirements and alignment with professional nursing standards.
  • Collaborate with program directors and associate/assistant deans to support new program development, teaching innovations, and interprofessional education initiatives.
  • Provides input on budget planning and resource allocation; assists in managing the budget in collaboration with the Dean but does not hold final budget authority.
  • Faculty Development and Support: Mentor faculty members to foster professional growth, scholarly productivity, and leadership development.
  • Conduct annual performance evaluations for direct reports, providing constructive feedback and setting goals for continuous improvement.
  • Empower faculty through inclusive leadership, fostering a collegial environment that supports shared governance and academic excellence.
  • Plan for faculty and resource needs, including submitting budget recommendations to support strategic priorities.
  • Student Affairs and Academic Integrity: Implement and monitor policies governing student admission, progression, retention, and graduation across all nursing programs.
  • Verify student academic status and communicate decisions regarding admissions, progression, and academic standing.
  • Oversee academic grievance procedures, ensuring fair and timely resolution in accordance with institutional policies.
  • Maintain systems for academic documentation and compliance, supporting transparency and accountability.
  • Clinical and Regulatory Oversight: Ensure agency contracts are current and compliant, and that clinical sites meet academic, regulatory, and safety standards.
  • Ensure adherence to legal, regulatory, and professional standards, including those set by accrediting bodies and state/national nursing boards.
  • Professional Engagement and Representation: Actively participate in state and national organizations, such as the Texas Association of Deans and Directors of Professional Nursing Programs and the Texas Organization of Baccalaureate and Graduate Nursing Programs.
  • Maintain active membership in professional organizations, contributing to the advancement of nursing education and practice.
  • Represent the College and School of Nursing on internal and external committees, task forces, and institutional events, serving as a key liaison and advocate.
  • Institutional Integration and Strategic Alignment: Coordinate academic program activities with university-wide academic support systems to ensure integration with the College of Nursing and Health Professions' mission and strategic goals.
  • Assume administrative accountability for the quality and integrity of all educational program options within the JoAnne Gay Dishman School of Nursing.
  • Serve as Acting Dean when designated, providing continuity in leadership and decision-making.
  • Teaching and Scholarship: Maintain a minimum teaching load of 3 credits per academic year, contributing to the academic mission through instruction and mentorship.
  • Engage in scholarship and/or research activities, supporting the College's commitment to evidence-based practice and academic inquiry.
