POSITION PURPOSE Assist the Head Coach with all aspects of the Women’s Tennis Program in alignment with the College’s values and NCAA Division III philosophy. This position reports directly to the Head Tennis Coach. This position is 0.48 FTE that works 1000 annual hours.

Requirements

  • Must be able to explain and/or demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities to safely perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation. Specifically,
  • Knowledge of NCAA Division III rules and the ability to identify and recruit qualified student-athletes, including the ability to communicate effectively with recruits, parents, and coaches.
  • Outstanding skill instruction, strong playing background, and the ability to motivate players in both a practice setting and competitive games.
  • Ability to meet institutional driving requirements and safely drive students to and from approved activities.
  • Appreciation for the role of intercollegiate athletics in a highly selective academic environment, and the desire to help student-athletes strive for balance in that rigorous setting.
  • Strong administrative and computer skills, as well as excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to utilize organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must be highly motivated, respectful, have the ability to work both independently and in team settings, and have sound decision-making ability in all aspects of the Women’s Tennis Program.

  • Coaching and/or playing experience at the collegiate level or similar high-performance tennis experience.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and meet one of the following criteria: be at least 18 years old with 2 years of driving experience and complete a driver improvement course, OR be at least 19 with 3 years of experience and successfully pass a motor vehicle report (MVR) check.
  • OR a combination of relevant education, training, and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Supervisory Duties This role typically supervises at least one student employee.
  • Practice, Game Preparation & Coaching (50%) Teach fundamental principles and techniques (i.e., competition, traditions and sportsmanship) as well as the philosophy of the sport. Assist the Head Coach in the organization and preparation of practices and in conducting safe and strategic individual and team training sessions and competitive strategies. Help develop and implement game plans, reports, strategies and on-field duties as assigned. Assist in film breakdown and analysis. Serve as a mentor, teacher, leader and role model to student-athletes.
  • Recruitment of Prospective Student Athletes (25%) Support the Head Coach in the development and incorporation of a comprehensive recruiting plan that demonstrates successful results for the recruitment, yield and retention of academically and athletically qualified student-athletes.
  • Program Operations & Administrative Duties (15%) Assist with the arrangement and supervision of transportation, lodging and meals in conjunction with off-campus competition. Work with the team to ensure representation of the College, while off-campus, is at the highest level. Comprehend, understand and work within the parameters of Whitman College, the NWC and NCAA Division III philosophy and rules. Is proactive pertaining to all aspects of safety, including injury prevention, risk management, and the proper use of facilities and equipment. Maintains a safe and inclusive environment for student-athletes by identifying potential hazards, modeling best practices, and ensuring timely reporting of accidents or concerns. Complete special projects as assigned by the Head Coach and the Director of Athletics.
  • Managing Community Tennis (10%) Coordinate team, alumni and community outreach and events, including tennis camps, clinics and community service. Represent the College and its athletic program with honesty, integrity and sportsmanship at all times to various institutional programs and students, parents, the general public, alumni and external agencies. Develop positive, professional relationships with officials, league personnel, coaching colleagues and administrative staff.
