About The Position

The Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine seeks an Equipment Operator to support daily biocontainment and waste management operations across the Veterinary College. This role is essential to keeping facilities running safely and smoothly by handling medical, pathological, and carcass waste in accordance with safety and regulatory requirements. The position involves physical, team-based work in active facilities and requires comfort working around equipment, animals, and protective gear. The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Support daily operations of the Waste Management Facility and Teaching Dairy Barn, including operation of waste treatment equipment and after-hours response as needed Handle, transport, segregate, and process medical, pathological, and carcass waste in compliance with University, State, and Federal regulations Maintain clean, safe facilities and respond to biohazardous spills while strictly following decontamination and biosafety procedures Work in high-risk environments requiring physical labor, PPE (including respirators), exposure to biological and chemical hazards, and manipulation of animal remains Important Details about the Position This is an onsite position located in Ithaca, NY. We are unable to provide Visa sponsorship, now or in the future, for this position. Relocation assistance will not be provided for this position. While the regular business hours are 7:00am am to 3:30 pm, the specific schedule may change to meet the needs of the business, requiring employees to work early mornings, evenings, weekends and University holidays and scheduled breaks. Requirements

  • High School Diploma with 3-5 years demonstrated experience preparing medical waste for disposal, facility disinfection, and/or handling intact and sectioned infectious (sometimes partially decayed) animal carcasses, or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to demonstrate proficiency in operating the Rotoclave and SMS and in processing hydrocremations and associated paperwork within 6 months of employment
  • Ability to follow safety and regulatory compliance procedures.
  • Basic computer knowledge, including electronic mail, web, and business applications.
  • Good communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug test and be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with maintaining regulatory compliance records.
  • Knowledge of steam generation, fumigation, chemical safety, and light duty truck maintenance issues preferred.
