About The Position

The Assistant Vice Provost for Student Success (AVP) serves as a senior leader within the Student Success Division and supports the Vice Provost for Student Success in advancing university-wide goals related to undergraduate retention, graduation, and time-to-degree. The AVP plays a critical role in shaping, implementing, and assessing evidence-based academic support services and student success initiatives, with a focus on equity, effectiveness, and continuous improvement. This position is responsible for advancing a coordinated, institution-wide approach to student academic success and retention and for ensuring that student support structures align with Seattle University’s mission, values, and strategic priorities. The AVP for Student Success is an effective change agent who works collaboratively across academic and administrative units to strengthen student success outcomes. Reporting to the Vice Provost for Student Success, the AVP partners closely with schools and colleges, associate and assistant deans, faculty, and administrative leaders, and represents the division in cross-campus initiatives and decision-making bodies as appropriate. The scope of responsibilities may evolve in response to institutional priorities and emerging needs.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the position.
  • Ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in higher education and student affairs administration.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise discretion, represent senior leadership, and manage complex institutional issues with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, decision-making, and management skills.
  • Demonstrated success administering personalized and effective student services that contribute to student learning, development, and success.
  • Ability to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with students, parents, faculty, staff, administrators, and community partners.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness working with diverse stakeholders across an academic environment, including senior university leadership.
  • Extensive knowledge of university policies, procedures, and governance structures, with sound judgment in decision-making and recommendations.
  • Knowledge of program assessment, learning outcomes, and evaluation methodologies.
  • Understanding of and commitment to the mission, values, and educational philosophy of a Jesuit institution.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Flexibility to manage multiple complex roles requiring a broad base of knowledge.
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends as required.
  • Patience, attention to detail, follow-through, teamwork, calmness, industry, adaptability, and a sense of humor.

Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership and Division Operations – 30%
  • Provide strategic leadership, oversight, and operational management for a dynamic portfolio of departments, programs, and initiatives within the Student Success Division, with scope adjusted based on institutional priorities.
  • Serve as a key advisor to the Vice Provost for Student Success on matters related to divisional operations, personnel, budgeting, assessment, and program effectiveness.
  • Oversee performance management, evaluation processes, and continuous improvement efforts across assigned units, ensuring quality, equity, and alignment with divisional and university goals.
  • Monitor, review, and make recommendations related to unit budgets and resource allocation.
  • Policy, Strategy, and Institutional Effectiveness – 20%
  • Lead the review, development, and refinement of academic and student success policies, practices, and procedures to remove barriers, promote equity, and support student persistence, completion, and overall success.
  • Collaborate in the development and implementation of institutional strategies related to retention, completion, enrollment management, and student learning outcomes, aligned with Strategic Directions and mission commitments.
  • Support the design and use of assessment strategies and data-informed practices that measure student satisfaction, program effectiveness, and impact.
  • Partnerships and Student Impact – 20%
  • Build and sustain effective partnerships with academic deans, faculty, and campus stakeholders to ensure shared responsibility for student success initiatives and outcomes.
  • Guide the development and implementation of evidence-based practices and interventions—particularly those supporting vulnerable or underserved student populations—using assessment data to inform decision-making.
  • Collaborate with campus partners on initiatives related to enrollment management, student engagement, and post-graduation success.
  • Representation and Delegated Authority – 15%
  • Represent the Vice Provost for Student Success and the division in institutional meetings, committees, and external engagements as delegated, exercising independent judgment and decision-making authority when appropriate.
  • Serve as a visible and trusted leader for student success efforts across the university.
  • Culture, Equity, and Leadership – 10%
  • Foster a culturally responsive and inclusive work environment that advances equity, supports professional development, and promotes effective engagement with Seattle University’s diverse student populations.
  • Model collaborative leadership and support the development of high-performing, mission-aligned teams.
  • Other responsibilities include – 5%
  • Participate in university events, ceremonies, professional development activities, and institutional governance processes as appropriate to the role.
  • Serve on committees, task forces, and work groups, and lead special initiatives or projects aligned with divisional and university priorities.
  • Perform other related responsibilities or special projects as assigned by the Provost and/or Vice Provost for Student Success.
