The Association of American Railroads (AAR), the world's leading railroad policy, research, standard-setting, and technology organization, is focused on enhancing the safety and productivity of the U.S. freight rail industry. The Assistant Vice President, Safety & Operations (AVP, S&O) directly supports the Senior Vice President, Safety & Operations. This position acts in a deputy administrative capacity to the SVP, S&O, and, as such, is involved in all subject areas of the division. They have management and supervisory responsibilities for the division's 17 employees, under the guidance and direction of the SVP, S&O, or during their absence. This includes direct involvement with the Chicago Region Environmental and Transportation Efficiency (CREATE) Program. Specific responsibilities are described below. Nature and Scope This position reports to the Senior Vice President, Safety & Operations The position has no budgetary responsibility. Travel is required for this position. The AVP Safety and Operations' day-to-day activities include attending committee meetings, participating in formulating industry policies and policy papers, discussing appropriate courses of action with Department staff and others to achieve industry objectives, and outreach to government agencies. The AVP has extensive contact with other AAR staff, railroad staff, and regulators.
