About The Position

The Assistant Vice President (AVP) of Finance provides strategic and operational leadership in financial administration and supports the Vice President for Administrative Services in managing the College's finance services. This position reports to the Vice President for Administrative Services and serves as a member of the President's Cabinet. The AVP manages the Controller and finance functions of the College, including the external audit, annual fiscal report to the State University of New York (SUNY), and SUNY budget file submission.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, business administration, or a related field
5-10 years of progressively responsible experience in financial administration within government, business, industry, or education
At least five years of supervisory and/or managerial experience in financial or business operations
Strong knowledge of finance principles in a higher education environment
Proficiency in accounting software and enterprise database systems
Knowledge of federal, state and SUNY regulations, policies, and compliance requirements
Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a leadership team
Demonstrated ability to supervise staff and manage multiple projects effectively
Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, organizational, and presentation skills
Financial forecasting and strategic planning abilities

Primarily on-campus engagement with faculty and staff is required
Must be able to respond to unpredictable administrative or financial challenges, including crises and emergencies
May require occasional evening, weekend, and on-call availability, especially during peak periods
Uses College systems (e.g., Jenzabar), data tools, and digital platforms for reporting and analysis. Must demonstrate proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace applications

Responsibilities

Consults with the Vice President and senior staff regarding the College's short- and long-term financial goals, including financial modeling related to collective bargaining
Leads the development and management of the College's annual budget, collaborating with the Controller throughout the budgeting process
Assists department leaders in developing budget plans that inform decision-making and align with institutional priorities
In consultation with the Vice President for Administrative Services, supervises finance staff and associated reporting duties
Assists with budget development and management across College departments and provides guidance to budget managers and auxiliary units (Foundation Board, Dormitory Corporation, FSA) on accounting policies and procedures
Works with the Controller to provide costing data for revenue-generating programs to support program development and assess outcomes
Performs periodic cost and productivity analyses and prepares quarterly budget variance reports in collaboration with the Controller
Develops and manages the budget for finance units and reviews/approves departmental budget requests aligned with institutional goals
Supports professional development for supervisors within Finance
Leads assessment processes for finance offices and participates in non-academic program review
Works with the Purchasing function and the Vice President for Administrative Services on College-wide contracts with external vendors
Represents the Vice President at meetings, conferences (e.g., SUNY Community College Business Officers Association), and other events as designated
Chairs search committees for positions within the department
Performs other duties as assigned by the Vice President
Provides leadership and oversight in cash management, student accounts, restricted fund accounting, capital project accounting, internal controls, and insurance
Identifies opportunities for improvements in policies, procedures, and processes, and initiates changes as appropriate
Designs and implements, with support from accounting staff, a variety of financial analyses to support College operations, including current and long-term forecasting, budget modeling, and financial performance analysis
Provides customer service-oriented leadership that fosters collaboration, communication, and strong working relationships across College departments
Serves on the President's Cabinet and other internal or external committees as assigned
Collaborates with SUNY system counterparts and other higher education professionals, including those in human resources
Provides high level finance reports to the Board of Trustees, and works with Controller position to provide finance reports to the component units' boards
Oversees financial management and compliance of payroll vendors, ensuring accurate processing, seamless integration with accounting systems, and alignment with audit and regulatory standards
Collaborates with payroll personnel and provides training to ensure timely and accurate submission and reconciliation of journal entries
Ensures timely submission of all required federal and state tax documentation for students and employees, including W-2s, 1098-Ts, and 1099s
Compiles and submits year-end payroll and financial data in coordination with accounting staff
Maintains oversight of payroll-related internal controls and ensures compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and institutional policies
Coordinates with Human Resources and Information Technology to ensure accurate employee data flow between systems used for payroll processing
Uphold the highest standards of ethics and confidentiality in managing financial information; ensure adherence to internal controls, institutional policies, and applicable laws and regulations to support compliance and safeguard institutional assets
