About The Position

Join our team and play a role in maintaining the financial integrity of our town. This position offers the opportunity to work on a wide range of accounting functions, support municipal operations, and contribute to transparent, effective public service. The Town of Sharon is seeking a detail-oriented and collaborative Assistant Town Accountant to support the Town Accountant/Finance Director in managing the Town’s financial operations. This is an excellent opportunity for an accounting professional who values public service and wants to play a key role in municipal finance. This is a full-time (37.5 hours/week; M-W 8-5 pm; T 8-6 pm; F 8-12:30 pm) position with half-day Fridays year round.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in accounting, finance or related field and minimum of two years of professional accounting or related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Payroll, accounts payable and MUNIS software experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures efficient daily operation of the department, including processing of all department payrolls, processing of all invoices for inclusion on the warrant, posting of accounts payable and payroll to the General Ledger, and posting of Treasurer's receipts to General Ledger.
  • Maintains UMAS chart of accounts, establishing numbers for all funds and accounts as new moneys are received by the town.
  • Reviews all labor contract rates and School Department rate schedules for accuracy before submission to the Payroll Department.
  • Interacts with town officials and department heads to assure accurate balances in all department budgets.
  • Communicates with vendors regarding the status of invoice payments.
  • Prepares special reports as requested by other departments, committees, federal agencies and the state Department of Revenue.
  • Analyzes balance sheet for each fund monthly for accuracy of all accounts and investigates all discrepancies; makes all adjustments necessary to balance each fund.
  • Produces and distributes end of monthly expenditure reports to all departments, boards and committees.
  • Assists auditors in the verification of town expenditures, including those of federal grants of the general government and School Department, to ensure a good audit finding and renewed government funding.
  • Reconciles Treasurer's cash and accounts receivable to General Ledger and recommends corrective actions.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Town Accountant/Finance Director.
