About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Superintendent of Urban Forestry and Landscapes and the City Arborist, the Assistant to the City Arborist will perform the following duties: Under the direction of the City Arborist, help manage the maintenance and care of nearly 19,000 municipal trees, in public ways, parks, playgrounds, cemeteries, squares, plazas, medians, and public building grounds; monitor the activities related to planting, watering, pruning, pest control, removal, and storm response. Utilize a work order management system related to arboriculture operations to ensure efficient use of labor, materials, equipment, and facilities. Monitor online permitting program to review and approve tree removal permit applications. • Participate in and oversee tree planting operations to confirm adherence to pertinent best management practices. Monitor tree planting contract and ensure contract compliance using an asset management software. Requirements

  • Two to Three years of progressively responsible experience in arboriculture, either at the municipal or commercial level.
  • Proficiency in tree planting; including nursery stock selection, site preparation, tree installation, and required aftercare.
  • Working knowledge of cultural practices and equipment associated with maintenance and care of trees and shrubs, particularly those common to the northeastern United States.
  • Knowledge of ANSI A-300, Z-133 and Z60.1 standards of practice and operation.
  • Demonstrated skill in written communication, public speaking, and community relations.
  • Demonstrated skill in personnel and budget management.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification as an Arborist by either the Massachusetts Arborists Association or by the International Society of Arboriculture preffered.
  • Associate’s Degree with an emphasis in arboriculture, landscape management, horticulture, plant and soil science, or other related field preferred.
  • Knowledge and/or familiarity with municipal government operations and civil service procedures desirable.
