About The Position

The ASA assigned to the assisted outpatient treatment (AOT) grant position in the Behavioral Health Unit helps those who are suffering from serious mental illness, as well as those who care for them in the community. This federally funded grant, administered in collaboration with Cook County Health and Hospital Systems, funds an assisted outpatient treatment program designed to assist persons suffering from serious mental illness, who may also have history of hospitalization due to non-compliance with medication and treatment. The grant is intended to increase public safety and decrease future hospitalization and incarceration of participants, by providing them consistent access to, and assistance in maintaining, a proper treatment program. Court oversight and accountability for non-compliance, fosters participant ownership in the process and treatment goals.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor, licensed to practice in Illinois
  • Demonstrated interest in Mental Health related issues
  • Previous litigation experience (6-10 years)
  • Ability to manage heavy caseload and deadlines
  • Strong time management skills

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a prosecutors office
  • 3 to 5 years' experience in civil or criminal litigation, or combination of both
  • Working knowledge of the Mental Health Code
  • Experience working with diverse constituents, including mental health professionals

Responsibilities

  • ASA works with the involved parties in the treatment process to create the Agreed Court Order.
  • Order provides for mental health treatment and services on an outpatient basis.
  • The Order is presented to a mental health judge who approves or rejects it after accepting testimony.
  • The case is then placed on a court call where each participant is monitored by the court to see if they are complying with treatment and services.
  • The ASA is responsible for creating the Order, filing the Order with the court clerk and presenting testimony at the hearing for the Order.
  • The ASA is responsible for managing the weekly court call and providing the court, and other interested parties, with updates on the participants progress, as well as providing notice of court proceedings.
  • ASA also travels to various locations throughout the county and provides trainings to interested parties about the AOT program.
