About The Position

Cincinnati Nature Center (CNC) is looking for enthusiastic people who want to work in nature, with children, and on a team of other camp staff. CincyNature camps provide a safe and inclusive environment for children ages 3-15 to explore the natural world while making new friends. Camp staff drive our mission of “inspiring conservation” by creating positive experiences out in nature for campers. Campers learn and foster a love for the environment by experiencing it, enjoying it, and caring for it. With direction from the Camp Director and Camp Site Coordinators, our Assistant Camp Site Coordinators understand the duties and responsibilities of the three Site Coordinators and the operation of the three sites (Rowe Visitor Center, Fernwood Shelter, & Long Branch Farm & Trails). Assistant Camp Site Coordinators work on a team with the camp staff to carry out functions related to CincyNature summer camps and executes all activities with the highest standards for safety, customer service, and in keeping with the Nature Center’s Mission, Values, and Principles. The CincyNature Summer Camp Assistant Day Camp Site Director position can double as an internship or co-op opportunity for many majors. CNC is happy to work with colleges and universities to meet requirements for their internships/co-ops. Direct reports: None

Requirements

  • A hearty interest in the outdoors and enthusiasm for sharing that interest with children
  • Some knowledge and training in natural science preferred
  • Experience working with children
  • A sense of humor, creativity, and initiative
  • Desire to work as part of a team
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including the use of Outlook
  • Use of copy machines, postage machines, telephones, and other general office equipment
  • Collaborative working style utilizing strong organizational and customer service skills
  • Procure and provide proof of current First Aid and CPR certification prior to training week
  • Be a passionate advocate for nature to articulate the mission of Cincinnati Nature Center
  • Communicate effectively and professionally, including oral, written, and listening methods
  • Manage time and multiple priorities to meet deadlines
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external contacts
  • Exhibit good judgment, honesty, integrity, and responsibility
  • Must maintain confidentiality of sensitive and confidential information
  • Must pass a background check under the BCI code and FBI code 5104.013 as required by ODJFS
  • High school diploma and camp experience or experience leading groups of children are required.

Nice To Haves

  • Some college courses or a degree in the sciences or education are preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Rotate between sites (Rowe Visitor Center, Fernwood Shelter, & Long Branch) to learn and assist in the operation of each site.
  • Serve as a substitute for the Site Coordinators or Camp Counselors as needed.
  • Assist in the coordination and scheduling of each site and its camp staff, programs, and activities.
  • Assist in administrative duties, such as making sure staff have materials they need at the start of each week (health forms, sign-in sheets, etc.).
  • Assist with daily drop-off and pick-up.
  • Travel between camp groups to assist counselors when needed.
  • Lead projects, hikes, songs, stories, games, and crafts as campers actively explore the natural world around us.
  • Assist in emergency and safety procedures as needed.
  • Possible opportunity to help with overnights during select Long Branch camps.
  • Model culture/attitude of constant improvement and learning to camp staff, volunteers, and campers.
  • Assist counselors with planning, as needed, throughout the summer.
  • Create opportunities for community-building among camp staff prior to camp and during camp. Include opportunities for LITs, when appropriate.
  • Learn how to coach for both positive behaviors and development areas with peers, counselors, and LITs.
  • May assist the LIT Coordinator in leading activities for the teen LITs.
  • Assist the Site Coordinators in managing conflict between/with staff, campers, and parents/guardians.
  • Provide constructive and honest feedback to the Camp Director and Camp Coordinators about camp programs and staff.
