About The Position

Assistant Scientist - Erlanger, KY MAIN FUNCTION: The individual will be responsible for sample preparation, stock solutions and mobile phase preparation. They will also help the team with organization and ordering of supplies and chemicals as well as maintaining the inventory. The successful candidate will be self-motivated, diligent and team oriented. Prior flavor industry experience is a plus. This position will be based in ADM’s Erlanger, Kentucky location. DESCRIPTION OF WORK PERFORMED: Manage laboratory supplies; includes ordering and tracking of consumables, solvents and standards. Perform routine laboratory maintenance tasks, such as calibrating, cleaning and verification of equipment (pH meter, scales, GC, LC). Keeping common work areas clean and organized. Restocking consumables like pipets, vials etc.. Will work with the Analytical Flavor Insight Manager to conduct monthly safety walkthroughs. Responsible for sample receiving and recording in LIMS. This includes labeling the sample, working with the requester to fill in missing information, storage/organization of pending samples, disposal of samples according to our retention policy and communicating the incoming sample to the rest of the team. Provide technical support (e.g. sample preparation) to other team members and special projects as needed, e.g. volumetric dilutions, using an analytical balance, pH meter etc. Coordinate service calls for instrument repair and calibration. Adhere to laboratory safety policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Associates degree with 5+ years of relevant experience or BS with 2+ years of experience working in a laboratory setting.
  • Interest in learning how to conduct analytical chemistry in a flavor house, detail-oriented, good communication skills, technical knowledge, quality minded, collaboration, flexibility, teamwork, problem solving, dependability, curiosity, integrity and a commitment to safety.
  • Strong analytical skills in sample preparation, basic GC/LC operation and reporting.
  • Attention to detail and strong general familiarity with laboratory equipment and procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate verbally in a friendly yet business appropriate manner.
  • The individual can prepare basic business and Email correspondence with appropriate word selection and usage.
  • Maintain accurate, up to date and concise laboratory notebooks and records.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Computer Skills – The individual is comfortable with computer usage, Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook as well as analytical instrumentation software.
  • Mathematical Skills – The individual is comfortable with basic calculations, ratio scaling, percentage calculations.
