About The Position

The Assistant Purchasing Manager is responsible for supporting the execution of store based Merchandising responsibilities including managing VCAs and BAs and overseeing the vehicle assessment/verification processes, inventory management and store-based CarMax auctions (if applicable). As needed, the APM will also provide overall support for store management, the Offer Queue and Offsite Auctions. Principal Duties And Responsibilities: Store Merchandising Leadership Lead and manage a team, including Buyer’s Assistants and Vehicle Condition Assessors. Attracts and retains a high performing team through training and development. Schedules and staffs business operations and initiatives accordingly. Lead the on-site CarMax Auction team and ensure consistent execution of the Auction to support profitability. Develop Associates through timely and effective feedback, to include individual meetings, file reviews, performance management, and the Annual Performance Review (APR) process. Ensure positive Associate engagement and resolve Associate concerns by providing timely, specific, candid, and respectful feedback to Associates both within the Merchandising Department and throughout the store location(s). Drive team and store(s) performance through effective action plan development and execution with a focus on the company mission and the Merchandising Department’s goals (such as appraisal lane, offsite auctions, wholesale, and inventory management). Facilitate training modules (including skill assessments of attendees). Assess talent while interviewing, mentoring, and participating in Individual Development Plans. Support and champion the execution and sustainment of new store procedures, processes and technology platforms. Deliver exceptional customer service and work with other departments to create Iconic Customer experiences. Serve as primary Merchandising partner for store Senior Manager team. Utilize technology to effectively collaborate with peers at other locations. Perform the responsibilities and duties of the Purchasing Manager in his/her absence, as it relates to store Management. Precise and Accurate Buying through Offer Shifts and Off-site Auctions Evaluate and negotiate current market prices, understand, research, and assess vehicle damage and subsequent costs involved with the damage, and make financially sound purchasing decisions for the company through customer appraisals, offsite auctions or online venues. Leverage reporting and functional expertise to effectively manage retail and wholesale margins.

Requirements

  • Work requires ability to: Lead and manage a team of Associates effectively, including setting expectations, providing feedback to support their development, managing conflict, and delegating to support the team’s goals.
  • Exercise discretion and independent judgment in making important business decisions within strict timeframes and retain crucial information regarding the retail and wholesale vehicle market.
  • Show strong interpersonal skills to aide in building effective relationships throughout the department, store(s), and community.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking skills while analyzing high-level Merchandising and store reports.
  • Multi-task in a high-energy, fast-paced work environment.
  • Demonstrate adaptability in stressful situations.
  • Demonstrate strong teamwork, supporting the store, zone and merchandising department to drive an iconic customer experience.
  • Position requires a valid Driver’s License.
  • Successful completion of the Management Development Program (MDP) and Merchandising Manager Functional Assessments.
  • Previous Senior Buyer or Buyer experience is required.
