About The Position

Under the supervision of a higher classified employee, assists crew leaders and management with day to day activities and in his absence performs the duties of the crew leader. Operates various pieces of construction type equipment in the process of maintaining repairing streets, public rights-of-way, buildings, properties and utilities. Performs a variety of tasks to construct, maintain and repair streets, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, manholes, catch basins, water mains, and sewers. Operates equipment in the removal, collection, disposal of solid waste, bio solids, snow, ice and the loading and spreading of various types of material related to work assignments. Performs general maintenance, minor repairs and cleanup of equipment. Works to maintain and repair equipment and machinery at the wastewater treatment plant, water treatment plant and pumping stations. Performs other related activities as assigned. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works both indoors and outdoors. The employee may work near moving mechanical equipment. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet, moderate, or may be loud.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or G.E.D. with four (4) or more years of routine operation and maintenance of dump trucks, backhoes, and related equipment, as well as experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of machinery and equipment including industrial size pumps, motors, and compressors, or equivalent combination of job related education and experience.
  • Must demonstrate working knowledge of tools, equipment and materials used in operation and maintenance of machinery, troubleshooting techniques, and basic mechanics and electricity.
  • Must possess valid Michigan Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License with (CDL) with N endorsement good driving record at time of appointment and must be licensed to operate job required equipment mandated by State law and must maintain licensure during employment in this classification.
  • Those appointed this position on a full-time basis will have a Class S4 water distribution license or have the ability to and will obtain same within three (3) years.
  • In addition to the above requirements, all City positions require: the ability to read, write, speak and understand the English language as necessary for their position; the ability to follow written and oral instructions; and the ability to get along with other employees and members of the public.
  • City employees are also expected to possess and maintain a record of orderly law-abiding citizenship, sobriety, integrity and loyalty as it pertains to and reflects upon their employment with the City; and must be physically and mentally able to perform the essential duties of their position without excessive absences.
