About The Position

An exciting opportunity has been created for an experienced cancer researcher to join the Department of Cell, Developmental & Cancer Biology (CDCB) and Knight Cancer Institute, and Division of Hematology & Oncology in the Department of Medicine as an Assistant Professor, at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, OR. The successful candidate will have a successful basic research program with a translational focus in thoracic malignancies and other solid tumors, and accomplishments commensurate with experience. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an independent basic and highly translational research program that will achieve national and international recognition, and will be closely aligned to clinical research efforts in a manner that is prospectively designed to improve the clinical outcome for people with or at risk for cancer. The successful candidate will join the CDCB Dept and Div of Hem/Onc, within the NCI designated Knight Cancer Institute (Knight) that have significantly expanded laroratory-based basic and translational research across several areas of cancer. We seek applicants seeking a rich environment characterized by a high level of prior accomplishments that have served to alter central aspects of cancer research, treatment and prevention, that is highly dynamic, and that provides access to a wide range of scientific resources. The laboratory will reside in close proximity to tother basic/translational scientists within the new Knight Cancer Research Building. This rich working environment will allow for access to a wide range of scientific equipment and collaborators. The candidate will be expected to seek both intramural and external funding. They will also take on occasional teaching assignments within the university, consistent with the education mission of the institution. The individual will have demonstrated success in leading and managing projects and a distinguished record of scientific and technical accomplishments. Requirements

Doctorate degree in relevant field and 5 years of relevant work experience.

Nice To Haves

E i g h t or more years in a research position, including at least 4 years of postdoctoral project management experience
E xcellenc e demonstrated in grant and manuscript writing and editing
Proficient with computers specifically MS Office (which includes, Excel, Access, Word and PowerPoint) and statistical analysis software.
Strong publication record
Experience handling chemical and biologically hazardous materials.
Knowledge of policy and regulations applicable to the laboratory, including but not limited to safety, animal and radiation.
Technical proficiency, scientific creativity collaborative ability, and independent thinker

Experience with in-vivo and in-vitro models of cancer, drug discovery, preclinical testing of novel therapeutics, cancer biomarkers, statistics, bioinformatics, and experience with clinical trial data evaluation preferred.

Responsibilities

Scientific Project Oversight – Direct laboratory research projects. Including identification of scientific problem, design of approach to address it, and identification, acquisition and management of resources to perform investigations. Assign personnel, track their progress, and ensure maximum productivity. Foster and support teamwork. Provide training and guidance to postdoctoral fellows, clinical research fellows, graduate students and undergraduate students.
Laboratory Research Project Management: Independently develop and manage a research program, inclusive of research experiments, determining the most suitable methods to be used. Interpret and perform complex data analysis on experimental results and determine whether they are consistent with goals. Ensure that direct reports maintain accurate and detailed records of all experimental procedures, data collections and analysis performed. Maintain a high level of professional expertise through familiarity with current scientific literature. As needed, develop innovative techniques and experimental systems to meet research program goals.
Scientific Writing and Grant Management: Prepare research findings for presentation at scientific meetings and conference and manuscripts for publication. Prepare research proposals for grant applications that are aligned with the mission of the Knight.
Laboratory Organization and Compliance: Develop and implement procedures and systems to maximize the organization and efficiency within designated projects. Mentor and train lab members on lab practices and protocols. Ensure that staff is adequately trained to meet compliance for regulatory board reviews as required. Aid in the submission of specific protocols to the Institutional Review Board and other regulatory review boards, as appropriate.
Collaborative Interactions: Develop, foster and maintain relationships with partners in academia and in the pharmaceutical/biotechnology industries. Oversee the advancement of specific sponsored research agreement (SRA) funded projects and ensure that external partners receive regular project updates. Participate in occasional teaching assignments.
