With an anticipated start date of August 2026, this position is part of the Office of the Provost Artificial Intelligence (AI) Cluster Hire Initiative, which aims to expand AI interdisciplinary research and instruction across the university. This cluster hiring aims to recruit scholars with expertise in the interdisciplinary fields of biomedical imaging, artificial intelligence, and data science. While the Department of Radiology welcomes applicants whose work intersects biology, medicine, or other data-intensive fields, applicants should be scholars who are broadly interested in research that addresses significant scientific or societal challenges through advanced biomedical approaches. SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY: The candidate will supervise postdocs, students, research assistants or lab interns conducting projects. NATURE AND SCOPE: This position is part of the cluster, "Advancing Health through Mathematics Enhanced AI for Radiology and Endocrinology," which is jointly led by the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Medicine. The goal is to bring together and invest in faculty across departments whose research and scholarship are linked through this cluster and to attract faculty members who can bring different perspectives. The successful applicant is expected to contribute to an interdisciplinary academic environment through research, teaching, mentorship, and collaboration. Primary responsibilities include leading independent and collaborative research initiatives, applying AI and advanced imaging techniques to biomedical challenges, and participating in student training and curriculum development. The position emphasizes research that addresses health disparities and fosters inclusive excellence.

Requirements

  • PhD in Radiological Sciences, Physical Sciences, Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in biomedical imaging and AI applications.
  • A strong track record of research productivity and independent funding, or the potential to secure external grants.
  • Enthusiasm for interdisciplinary collaboration and translational research.

Nice To Haves

  • Teaching or mentoring experience at the undergraduate, graduate, or postdoctoral level is preferred.
  • Expertise in advanced biomedical imaging modalities (MRI, PET, CT, microscopy) and experience integrating AI techniques into imaging workflows (preferred).
  • Proficiency in programming and operating systems such as Bruker MRI and microPET/CT systems (preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Leverage Howard University's distinctive resources and datasets to address health disparities impacting historically underserved communities, with an emphasis on leveraging Artificial Intelligence technologies to improve diagnostic, treatment, and prevention strategies for diseases disproportionately affecting these populations.
  • Conduct research across various imaging science fields using disease animal models, including brain injury, neurological diseases, developmental disorders, diabetes, and nanomedicine. Utilize MRI/MRS, PET/CT, and other imaging modalities, incorporating Artificial Intelligence techniques to advance both preclinical and clinical applications.
  • Coordinate research collaborations between the imaging facilities in the Molecular Imaging Laboratory at Howard University. Provide expertise in imaging methods and experimental design from small animal imaging to translational-clinical imaging studies.
  • Organize training sessions and workshops for researchers interested in using the MRI.
  • Participates in academic, didactic, and professional training provided through seminars, workshops and direct meetings with grant faculty.
  • Conducts data collection, statistical analysis, and data interpretation responsibilities related to the Molecular Imaging Laboratory grant portfolio.
