About The Position

The University of New Mexico-Los Alamos (UNM-LA) invites applications for a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track faculty position in Mechanical Engineering at the rank of Assistant Professor. Full-time faculty at UNM-LA are required to teach, engage in service, and engage in professional development activities in accordance with established workload policies. The teaching load will regularly be comprised of courses in Mechanical Engineering such as Mechanical Engineering Design I and II, Engineering Statics and, possibly, courses in related disciplines based on the candidate's qualifications and interests. To meet the unique needs of our branch campus, a portion of the teaching load can be reallocated to service or professional development/activities/scholarship or administrative duties, in consultation with the Dean and Program Coordinator. Faculty may have the opportunity to develop courses in the faculty member's specific areas of expertise and interest. Full-time faculty members teach assigned day, evening, and weekend classes, in various modalities, in accordance with established guidelines and policies, as well as participate in student advising, faculty governance committees, other academic and institutional support activities, and supervisory responsibilities as assigned. All faculty members are expected to remain current in teaching best practices and transformational pedagogy, and to adhere to accepted standards for professionals in education. Additional responsibilities may include possible supervision of internships, participating in curriculum development, training and mentoring adjunct faculty, attending forums and meetings, participating in initiatives related to undergraduate research, grant-writing, and serving on additional department and college committees and boards as requested. Final offer is contingent upon having the ability to be on campus in Los Alamos at least three days per week. Appointment begins August 10, 2026.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or closely related engineering field by application date

Nice To Haves

  • Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering by application date
  • Experience teaching engineering lecture and laboratory courses at a post-secondary institution, including upper-division undergraduate courses in mechanical engineering
  • Demonstrated evidence of experience in curriculum development, student mentoring, and/or undergraduate research
  • Experience with 3D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred)
  • A demonstrated commitment to cultivate an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and to the success of the university's mission to serve local and global communities
