About The Position

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Minnesota invites applications for a term contract non-tenure track Assistant Professor position with a 12-month, annually-renewable appointment beginning summer or fall term of 2026 (June 1, 2026 or later). We seek outstanding applicants with a Ph.D. in chemistry or a related field, with strong preference for a focus in administration of large (around 5,000 students per year) general chemistry laboratory courses. Successful applicants will have a strong commitment to undergraduate chemistry education and to developing innovative, evidence-based, high-quality curricular materials and instructional initiatives. The successful candidate will be the director and instructor of record for the general chemistry laboratories (CHEM 1017, 1065, 1066) as well as acting in department service roles and conducting chemical education or pedagogical research as determined in consultation with Department of Chemistry leadership. Interest in using pedagogies and curricula that support student academic success and create an inclusive environment and incorporation of sustainable chemistry principles are encouraged. This full-time position is responsible for all general chemistry lab courses in the three academic terms each calendar year. The appointee will also have responsibilities for department and university service. Successful candidates will be provided clear guidelines toward promotion, annual reviews, a mentoring committee, capacity for professional development, eligibility for teaching awards, and opportunities to mentor M.S. students.

Requirements

  • Ph.D required in Chemistry or related field
  • Experience teaching or administering large laboratory courses at the post secondary level
  • Experience supervising and mentoring student Teaching Assistants
  • Appointees must have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. or equivalent foreign degree by the date of appointment with a preferred start date for the summer 2026 or fall 2026 academic term.

Responsibilities

  • TEACHING: Normal teaching course load includes CHEM 1017, 1065, and 1066 each semester, fall, spring, and summer. Develop and teach courses, using modern pedagogies, and coordinate course content through collaboration with department colleagues. Develop appropriate evidence-based curriculum, experiments, and laboratory manuals. Train, supervise, and mentor large numbers of teaching assistants. This position must work with the faculty coordinator of CHEM 1001, 1061, and 1062 to align laboratory and lecture courses. Administrative coordination across multi-section courses will also be part of this teaching effort.
  • SERVICE and RESEARCH: Contribute through serving on departmental and university governance committees, doctoral candidacy exams, and on M.S. degree committees. As relevant or desired in consultation with the department head, contribute through chemical education or pedagogical research.
