About The Position

The School of Performing Arts at The University of Akron invites applications for a non-tenure-track Assistant Professor of Practice – Artist/Teacher of Saxophone beginning in August 2026. Responsibilities will include teaching, service to the school, college, and university, commensurate with the expectations of full-time faculty in the School of Performing Arts. We seek scholars that will lead collaborations among faculty, students and community partners that address questions of well-being, public safety, and civic engagement. The UA School of Performing Arts is part of the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences and has a long history of excellence in performance and teaching. The School offers curricula in arts administration, dance, and music at the bachelor’s and master’s levels and is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music and the National Association of Schools of Dance. Requirements

  • Master of Music degree (Saxophone performance or closely related field).
  • Teaching experience in higher or secondary education, or commensurate professional experience.
  • Artistic activity as a saxophone performer and pedagogue.

Nice To Haves

  • DMA or equivalent professional experience.
  • Creative/scholarly activity at the regional, national, and/or international level.
  • Evidence of recruiting and retention of undergraduate and graduate saxophone students.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching applied undergraduate and graduate saxophone students.
  • Coaching chamber ensembles (saxophone quartets, saxophone choir, and other chamber music ensembles as assigned).
  • Coordinating and teaching the weekly saxophone studio class.
  • Participating in faculty meetings and committees; and engaging in other service appropriate to a full-time faculty member.
  • Additional responsibilities may be assigned based on the candidate’s strengths and background in accordance with the needs of the School of Performing Arts.
