About The Position

The successful candidate will provide on-site teaching in an undergraduate nursing program including classroom, simulation, and clinical environments. Teaching assignments may vary depending upon the needs of the nursing program which include medical-surgical nursing, community health, obstetrics & pediatric nursing and foundations/fundamentals.

Requirements

  • Earned MSN with specialization in nursing education from a regionally accredited college or university or a graduate degree with a major other than in nursing but also have a baccalaureate degree with a major in nursing
  • A current unencumbered license as a registered nurse or multistate licensure privilege to practice nursing in the state of Virginia at the time of hire.
  • Evidence of current experience in nursing practice (minimum of three years) and teaching sufficient to demonstrate professional competence.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in the following nursing disciplines: fundamentals, medical-surgical, mental health, critical care or a combination thereof.
  • Evidence of continuing professional education and a commitment to lifelong learning.
  • Ability to engage in scholarly activity.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively engage with students and ensure excellence in instruction.
  • Ability to identify and apply assessment tools and/or methods to determine if learning outcomes were achieved.
  • All applicants must demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in written and spoken English.

Nice To Haves

  • Doctoral degree (PhD, DNP, EDD) in nursing
  • Experience using virtual and in-person patient care simulation software and high-fidelity simulators
  • Knowledge of nursing accreditation
  • Experience and certification as a nurse educator

Responsibilities

  • Planning and providing classroom and clinical instruction to facilitate student learning
  • Assisting in academic advising of undergraduate nursing students
  • Assisting the nursing faculty team in curriculum design and evaluation
  • Applying best practice standards from entities such as the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN), American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), National League for Nursing (NLN) and Quality & Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN)
  • Facilitate teaching and learning processes and principles with a commitment to continuous quality improvement
  • Integrating governmental, accreditor and industry standards to classroom and clinical instruction from entities such as the Virginia Board of Nursing (VBON) and the Commission on the Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)
  • Participating in the Department of Nursing governance
  • Assessing and evaluating student progress toward attaining learning outcomes established for the courses and nursing program.
  • Documenting student learning, interpreting outcomes, and recording grades.
  • Assisting with student recruitment, admission, and retention.
  • Maintaining accurate and appropriate student, instructor, course, simulation/clinical and program documentation.
  • Creating and maintaining effective collegial relationships with students, faculty, university, and clinical agency staff and administration.
  • Modeling professional evidence-based nursing that is sensitive to diverse and multicultural considerations.
  • Establishing and maintaining professional and ethical boundaries with students, co-workers, and others in all learning environments.
  • Participating in University service and events.
  • Perform other responsibilities that may be assigned by the Department of Nursing Chair.
