About The Position

The University of Northern Iowa's Department of Economics in the Wilson College of Business seeks applications for an Assistant Professor of Practice or Instruction, starting in August 2026. This position is a 9-month academic year, two-year term appointment, with a primary focus on undergraduate teaching and economics education outreach. The appointment may be extended after the initial two year term. The standard teaching load is four 3-credit economics courses per semester, delivered through a combination of in-person and online modalities. New hires receive a one-course reduction in either the fall or spring semester of their first year. Depending on expertise and departmental needs, teaching assignments may include Introduction to Business Economics, Principles of Macroeconomics, Principles of Microeconomics, Statistics for Business Analytics, and/or Decision Analytics. Regular on-campus presence and scheduled office hours are required. In addition to teaching, this position includes a service role supporting the department’s economics education initiatives, with particular emphasis on developing and delivering online and classroom-based resources for K–12 teachers and students. Especially welcome are applicants who can bridge the gap between theory and practice and can convey the importance of economics in a business environment. The Wilson College of Business (business.uni.edu) is AACSB-accredited with separate accounting accreditation and offers Bachelor of Arts degrees in five departments (Accounting, Economics, Finance, Management, and Marketing & Entrepreneurship) along with MBA and MAcc degrees. The Wilson College of Business has 49 full-time faculty and 52 staff and enrolls approximately 1,600 undergraduate majors and 100 graduate students. The Wilson College of Business is recognized as a "Best Business School" by The Princeton Review, listed among U.S. News & World Report's top part-time MBA programs, and as a Military Times Best for Vets: Business Schools. The Wilson College of Business has a strong international presence, developing strategic alliances with several international business schools, and delivers its MBA program in Shanghai. The Wilson College of Business boasts a significant economic outreach unit, Business & Community Services, engaging faculty and students, annually working in all 99 counties in Iowa and 37 states, actively contributing to the economic vitality in Iowa and beyond. The Department of Economics consists of 8 faculty members and around 70 undergraduate students majoring in the department. The department has a history of teaching excellence evidenced by the active engagement of our students. Requirements

  • Master’s in economics from an AACSB-accredited university required.
  • Record of excellence in teaching online
  • Record of excellence in teaching in-person
  • At least two (2) semesters of in-person stand-alone teaching experience
  • At least two (2) semesters of online teaching experience
  • Evidence of ability to create an engaged and applied classroom environment
  • Demonstrated organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills required.

Nice To Haves

  • PhD in economics from an AACSB-accredited university
  • Experience teaching principles of microeconomics, principles of macroeconomics, or business statistics online
  • Evidence of ability to advance the academic, professional, and personal success of students preferred.
