About The Position

The Assistant Professor of Criminology will provide instruction to undergraduate students at Heidelberg University on a 4/4 full-time teaching load. Courses may include Introduction to Criminology and Criminal Justice, Introduction to Sociology, Victimology, Juvenile Justice, Research Methods and Statistics, Corrections, and courses in the hire’s specialization. This is a non-tenure-track position beginning in August 2026. Review of applications will begin on January 12th, 2026 and continue until a suitable candidate is found. Requirements

  • A PhD in Criminology or closely related field from an APA accredited institution.
  • A.B.D. candidates will also be considered with the expectation that their doctoral degree is awarded before August 1st, 2026.
  • Will qualify with equivalent professional experience as defined in the Heidelberg Faculty Manual.
  • College-level teaching experience.

Nice To Haves

  • The search area is open, but preference will be given to candidates with expertise in one or more of the following areas: critical criminology, sociological theories of crime, corrections, comparative criminology, criminalistics, or social work.
  • Additional preference will be given to candidates with a willingness and ability to build community connections in the criminal justice system.
  • History or ability to perform research with undergraduates.

Responsibilities

  • Teach a full-time teaching load which could include: Introduction to Criminology and Criminal Justice, Research Methods and Statistics, Corrections, Victimology, Introduction to Sociology, Juvenile Justice, and new courses pertaining to the hire’s specialization.
  • Utilize innovative and collaborative teaching methods in support of the School’s mission and learning objectives.
  • Attend school and faculty meetings.
  • Contribute to School and interdisciplinary initiatives, including recruitment and retention efforts and curriculum development.
  • Participate in University activities including but not limited to: extra- and co-curricular activities supporting student success and achievement in alignment with a liberal arts tradition, academic advising, institutional and school service, and professional development activities which personally and academically enhance a professional academic career.
  • Perform other essential duties as assigned in the Faculty Manual.
