About The Position

The Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Savannah State University is seeking applicants for a 10-month, tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice, beginning Fall 2026. Criminal Justice is a popular discipline and has an online degree option. We are seeking to increase the corps of instructors to expand both in-person and online course offerings while strengthening community and industry partnerships. The successful applicant will teach a variety of criminal justice courses, such as Introduction to Criminal Justice, Research Methods, Statistics, Crime Analysis, and Criminal Justice Management. Online and in-person teaching is required. The candidate is expected to demonstrate proficiency in online course delivery, experiential learning strategies, student engagement, and contribute to the growth and innovation of our program. NOTE: In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required eligibility verification form upon hire. This position does not offer sponsorship for employment visas.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Criminal Justice, Criminology, or related field from an accredited institution OR
  • A doctorate in a related field (e.g. Sociology, Political Science, Forensic Science, Law/J.D.) with a master's degree in criminal justice, criminology, or a closely related field including at least 18 graduate credit hours in the discipline.
  • ABD candidates are welcome to apply and must provide evidence of degree completion within the first year of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Teach 24 credit hours per academic year (in-person and online)
  • Support student success through effective teaching, mentoring, advising, and experiential learning strategies
  • Contribute to student recruitment and retention efforts
  • Engage in disciplinary scholarly activities to contribute to knowledge and advance the field
  • Participate in service to the profession, institution, and the community
  • Contribute to curriculum development, program assessment planning, and reporting
  • Engage in professional development and remain up to date with disciplinary standards
  • Manage and utilize online platforms effectively, with a preference for experience using Desire2Learn and EAB Navigate 360
  • Fulfill additional responsibilities as outlined in the University Faculty Handbook
  • Contribute to a positive work environment in the department and the University
  • Engage with industry partners, professionals in the field, alumni, and the broader community to support workforce development initiatives
