About The Position

The Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch seeks board-certified internists at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level to join a growing Division of General Medicine serving Southeast Texas through UTMB's multi-campus health system. Faculty members will provide comprehensive adult primary care, hospital medicine services, consultative general medicine, and care for medically complex patients, contribute to the education of medical students, residents, and fellows, and have opportunities to develop scholarly activities aligned with their interests and the division's strategic priorities.

Requirements

  • MD or DO degree from an accredited institution.
  • Board certification or board eligibility in Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (or equivalent).
  • Eligibility for medical licensure in the State of Texas.
  • Completion of ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine residency.
  • Demonstrated commitment to clinical excellence, education, and professional development.

Responsibilities

  • Provide attending nocturnist coverage or direct patient care on general medicine inpatient services with daily rounds, patient evaluation, and treatment plan development.
  • Manage patients admitted with common medical conditions including pneumonia, heart failure, COPD exacerbations, acute kidney injury, sepsis, diabetic complications, and other general medical conditions.
  • Lead interdisciplinary rounds with nursing, pharmacy, case management, physical therapy, and social work.
  • Make admission, discharge, and transfer decisions with attention to appropriate level of care.
  • Coordinate subspecialty consultation and co-management.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives including reduction of hospital-acquired conditions and readmission prevention.
  • Provide perioperative medical consultation and co-management for surgical patients.
  • Supervise residents and medical students during inpatient rotations with bedside teaching and clinical reasoning education.
  • Document clinical encounters with comprehensive assessment, treatment plans, and follow-up arrangements.
  • Ensure compliance with coding and billing practices for primary care and hospital medicine services.
  • Participate in clinical quality improvement initiatives.
  • Engage in peer review, case review, and quality assurance activities.
  • Maintain current knowledge of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines.
  • Supervise Internal Medicine residents in continuity clinic, inpatient general medicine services, and serve as longitudinal career mentors.
  • Teach bedside clinical skills including history-taking, physical examination, clinical reasoning, and communication skills.
  • Provide procedural teaching including basic procedures (venipuncture, intravenous access, Foley catheter placement) and advanced procedures (paracentesis, thoracentesis, arthrocentesis, central line placement, arterial line placement) as applicable.
  • Deliver didactic lectures on general medicine topics including common inpatient and outpatient conditions, clinical reasoning, and evidence-based medicine.
  • Mentor trainees in career development, specialty selection, and professional identity formation.
  • Contribute to curriculum development, competency assessment, and program evaluation for medical student and residency education.
