About The Position

In the effort to catalyze New York City’s transition to a clean, resilient, and equitable energy future, the Office of Alternative Energy (OAE) was established pursuant to NYC Administrative Code section 28-103.33 to streamline the process for obtaining the necessary approvals to install and maintain alternative energy projects from the Department and other relevant agencies. OAE is housed in the Office of Technical Certification and Research (OTCR). Under supervision, the Assistant Plan Examiner, Alternative Energy performs work of moderate difficulty and responsibility in the engineering analysis of structures and building equipment systems, and the examination of plans for the construction, alteration or repair of buildings and equipment systems under the jurisdiction of the Department of Buildings.

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in electrical engineering work; or
  • A baccalaureate degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college and a master’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • A master’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university can only be used to substitute for one year of full-time satisfactory work experience in electrical engineering.
  • A degree in any other engineering area, or in any engineering technology area, is not acceptable.

Responsibilities

  • Review and process applications in connection with alternative energy projects
  • Work with applicants, manufacturers, and integrators to obtain required documentation
  • Standardize review processes and/or establish acceptance criteria for frequently used technology.
  • Work directly with design and construction professionals and filing representatives to achieve their new building or alteration program, including related alternative energy technology projects, in a code compliant manner.
  • Work with staff in Technical Affairs, as required to ascertain compliance with other applicable laws of New York City.
  • Review site safety plans.
  • Engage in research, investigations, studies and examinations related to alternative energy and alternative materials.
  • Explain compliant development, Department rules and laws to public in-person, by telephone, or by email.
  • Testify, as needed to support such technology development and department issued violations issued for non-compliant construction, alteration, and repairs.
  • As directed, perform fieldwork to make on site evaluation of installed work, including code compliance and safety.
  • May operate a motor vehicle in performance of assigned duties.
