We are looking for someone willing to grow in their career from Baker to Pastry Sous The Assistant Pastry Chef/Baker is responsible to prepare food and pastries in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, and Westminster-Canterbury's established policies and procedures. The Assistant Pastry Chef/Baker may receive guidance and be directed by the Sous Chef, Pastry Chef, Executive Chef and, the Asst. Director or Director of Dining Services, to ensure that quality food service is provided at all times. Expected to maintain a positive and professional working relationship with all residents and team members. Requirements

  • Experience in a high volume food production setting.
  • 1-3 years of related experience in a professional bakery or kitchen environment.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of food preparation and handling techniques.
  • Strong knowledge of safety and sanitation rules and practices.
  • Available to work a flexible schedule, including some weekends, holidays and morning shifts.
  • General knowledge of food safety and sanitation procedures and practices.
  • Flu-Vaccinated
  • Demonstrates clear, professional, verbal and written communication with colleagues, residents, and stakeholders.
  • Ensure consistency and high-quality presentation; cakes, pastries, and desserts with artistic flair.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary workspace, complying with health, safety, and sanitation regulations.
  • Ability to take direction from the Pastry Chef while working effectively with other team members.
  • Must be able to lift, work on your feet throughout shift, and bend, kneel, stoop, and reach
  • Able to operate kitchen equipment (including fire extinguisher)
  • Must be able to stand six to eight hours per day.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduate of an Accredited Culinary Arts Program
  • Possessing a ServSafe certificate
  • 2 to 5 years of hands-on experience in a professional kitchen or bakery.
  • Proficiency in advanced techniques, including: puff pastry, choux pastry, and shortcrust, as well as chocolate work, bread, and sugar craft.
  • COVID-19 Vaccinated. As of now, the 2025–2026 COVID-19 vaccine formulation is being distributed to providers and pharmacies; however, it has not yet received official approval from the CDC. In Virginia, pharmacists may administer COVID-19 vaccines under the Virginia Board of Pharmacy’s statewide protocols or with a direct order from a licensed medical provider. Responsibilities

  • The Assistant Pastry chef/Baker will follow recipes provided for preparation and plate service of food.
  • Prepares specialty yeast products, prepares from scratch breads and quick breads.
  • Prepares a variety of types of cookies and cakes using approved techniques for mixing, panning, baking and basic decorating.
  • Prepares a variety of fillings and toppings for pastries and baked goods and produces a variety of types of pies and tarts.
  • Completes meal temperature and evaluation checks, and formally tastes all food items prepared.
  • Prepares and serves correct portions.
  • Follows safety and sanitation rules and practices and cleans work area and equipment used in food preparation.
  • Ensures that all food preparation and assembling is done in accordance with Universal Precautions and established procedures.
  • Demonstrates proper selection of equipment and utensils for specific application and proper scaling and measurement techniques.
  • Offers creative suggestions to enhance the quality of service provided by the Bakery.
  • Trains and mentors the Apprentice Pastry Chef following the direction of the Pastry Chef.
  • Maintains compliance with the tracking and monitoring systems utilized to maximize productivity and efficient use of supplies and resources.
  • Disposes food and waste in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Assists in standardizing work methods and establishing food service production lines to ensure meals are timely prepared
  • Completes preparation records appropriately for all dining venues.
  • All other duties as assigned.
