About The Position

The Department of Education, Culture & Society ( ECS ) ( http://ecs.utah.edu/ ) in the College of Education at the University of Utah invites applications for a tenure track Assistant/Associate Professor position with research and teaching expertise in educational theory with an emphasis on issues of gender and sexuality. ECS is a diverse, multi-disciplinary group of scholars committed to the study and pursuit of social justice in education using cutting-edge frameworks that address class, race, ethnicity, culture, language, immigration status, gender and sexuality in educational policy and practice. ECS offers Ph.D., M.Ed., professional and undergraduate program specialties in curriculum theory, cultural studies in education, multilingual/multicultural education ( ESL / DLBE ), community-engaged pedagogy, and the social foundations of education (anthropology, sociology, history, and philosophy of education). The department also offers undergraduate courses as a part of our commitment to develop culturally and linguistically responsive, socially just educators and community-engaged scholars. ECS is deeply committed to fostering collaboration across campus and across the state’s school districts, community-based organizations, and policy networks, to prepare educational professionals who are successful in diverse educational contexts; and to support distinction in teaching, service, and scholarship. We seek candidates whose interests include but are not limited to: Queer theory/intersections of Queer theories; gender studies; masculinity; sexuality studies. We especially welcome scholars who bring clarity and new ways of thinking about pressing issues related to discourse and decisions relevant to the education of diverse groups of learners.

Requirements

  • An earned doctorate in education or Philosophy of Education with emphasis in Gender studies, Sexuality studies or related field by August 2024
  • Evidence of research/teaching focus that includes: Queer theory, Gender studies, Intersections of Queer theories, masculinity, or Sexuality studies in education;
  • A record of, or strong potential in, teaching critical theoretical and/or philosophical foundations of education
  • A record of, or strong potential in, high-quality research, publications, and teaching
  • A commitment to research and service with diverse students, families, and communities with an emphasis on issues of gender & sexuality and its intersections with race, ethnicity, language, immigration status, and socioeconomic status
  • Demonstrated strong record of scholarly achievement and extramurally funded research commensurate with the rank of Associate Professor at the University of Utah
  • Evidence of a strong record of graduate teaching up to the doctoral level commensurate with the rank of Associate Professor at the University of Utah
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities commensurate with the rank of Associate Professor at the University of Utah

Responsibilities

  • Maintain active research agenda that critically investigates gender and sexuality in education, with a commitment to intersectional, transnational, masculinity, queer and feminist teaching, and learning.
  • Publish scholarly works in high-quality outlets.
  • Seek and secure external funding to support research and further interdisciplinary research initiatives
  • Develop, tailor, and teach four courses per academic year that focus on educational theory and gender and sexuality in education, with a commitment to intersectional, transnational, masculinity, queer and feminist teaching, and learning and core ECS courses in area of expertise.
  • Mentor and advise undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students
  • Serve on graduate exam and dissertation committees
  • Collaborate and engage in service to the department, college, state and national professional organizations, school districts, and local communities.
