About The Position

The Assistant Unit Manager assists the Nurse Manager with ensuring that quality nursing care is delivered to all residents on his/her nursing units in accordance with the philosophy, policies, procedures, and program plans of the facility. Assists with the development of resident care standards, policies and procedures, orientation and continuing education. Performs evaluation of staff performance and participates in Quality Assurance. Assists with unit administration including scheduling and daily operations. Contributes to achieving departmental goals by performing management of the daily operations of multiple nursing units. Supports the Nurse Manager by planning, coordinating, and supervising the work of nursing personnel for multiple nursing units, acts for Nurse Manager (within the scope of abilities) during absences or as directed. Evaluates or assists in evaluating the performance of subordinate personnel; assists in the scheduling of personnel and approving their Kronos schedules; assists in the coordination of in-service educational programs and staff meetings; assists preceptors in developing unit orientation programs for new nurses or program staff. Assists in the development of policies and procedures, standards of care and practice, and in the monitoring of nursing care in relation to those standards to assure compliance with DOH, and other regulatory standards such as those required by CMS or public health program grants; advises staff on the interpretation and application of agency policies and public health laws and regulations. Assists in preparing administrative records, reports and correspondence related to budget and unit or program operations. Promotes reliability in the MDS classification of residents and ensures staffing requirements are met. Promotes collaboration among other departments, units, programs and physicians; represents assigned unit(s) or programs in committee meetings.

Requirements

  • Minimum Education Requirement : LPN or Bachelor’s in Social Work or Business.
  • Minimum Experience Requirement : Minimum of three years nursing, social work experience or other relevant discipline.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Organizational ability.
  • Demonstrated clinical expertise in care area standards.
  • Ability to look at issues and the impact decisions have on the department.
  • Must possess and demonstrate knowledge of the geriatric population.
  • Visual and auditory acuity with or without adaptive devices.
  • Minimum License Requirement : NYS licensed LPN or Social Worker

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience as a charge nurse/preceptor/in-service development preferred.
  • Charge nurse or management experience and leadership skills.
