The Dallas Morning News is seeking an Assistant News Editor/Weekends to provide leadership and editing support for the newsroom, infusing urgency, immediacy and creativity. This editor will work Wednesday through Sunday with a primary focus on preparing weekend stories for publication on multiple platforms and leading the charge as the daytime editor on the weekend days. This journalist will collaborate with fellow editors across the newsroom to help plan and package weekend stories and coverage that engage and serve our North Texas audience and help optimize all content. A strong candidate will be a talented communicator, collaborator and multitasker, and have robust editing skills along with an understanding of and ambition for accountability journalism. This editor must be well-organized and be a bridge-builder in creating relationships. This editor will directly manage reporters. This editor must have strong news judgment, a keen sense of urgency and immediacy and be ready to lead reporters in tense, fast-moving situations. They'll also need to be adept at making smart decisions as news develops quickly. This editor will play a key role in our most ambitious work and be the person who gets the baton on big news stories that start late in the week and roll into the weekend. Recent examples are the Texas Hill Country floods, the ICE shooting and Marshawn Kneeland's death. This editor will take the lead on driving coverage through the weekend, making assignments, coordinating teams and motivating journalists. An understanding of and an interest in audience behavior and newsroom analytics is important. You'll need to be thinking about SEO and newsgathering tactics that help grow our audience and position The Dallas Morning News as the leading news outlet in North Texas.
