In addition to behavioral health care, Metrocare provides primary care centers for adults and children, services for veterans and their families, accessible pharmacies, housing, and supportive social services. Alongside clinical care, researchers and teachers from Metrocare’s Altshuler Center for Education & Research are advancing mental health beyond Dallas County while providing critical workforce to the state. The Medical Assistant performs routine, delegated clinical and administrative duties within the supervising medical staff members scope of practice consistent with the medical assistants education, training and experience. Such duties shall not constitute the practice of medicine.

Responsibilities

  • Provides medical staff member extender services, including coordination of lab results, and obtaining authorizations for ordered medications.
  • Administers medications as delegated by a medical staff member or APN.
  • Performs venipuncture as delegated by a medical staff member.
  • Obtains Vital Signs when delegated by medical staff member.
  • Provides patient teaching to individuals and to groups regarding mental health, medication, and other health-oriented or supportive topics as delegated by medical staff member or APN.
  • Coordinates needed medical, dental, and prevention services when delegated.
  • Coordinates consumer care with PCP, pharmacy, and/or other healthcare providers as needed.
  • Identifies all consumers clearly before the administration of any medication, phlebotomy, and/or electrocardiograms.
  • Documents care provided accurately, appropriately, legibly and in a timely fashion.
  • Documents verbal/telephone refill authorization within 2 hours when delegated by medical staff member.
  • Assures that medical staff member cosigns the documented refill authorization within 24 hours.
  • Bills for services honestly and accurately.
  • Participates in Quality Improvement activities, i.e., reviewing documentation, consumer care and departmental and Center policies.
  • Maintains a safe and clean consumer care work area.
  • Uses work time productively. Monitors productivity reports on a weekly or daily basis.
  • Promotes positive relations between the specific units and other departments, consumers, medical staff members and community agencies.
  • Maintains confidentiality concerning consumer/Center information.
  • Communicate effectively with consumer/family to elicit essential information with accuracy and timeliness.
  • Attends staff meetings regularly as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school/GED with 0 to two years experience in MH/MR or human services.
  • Graduate of a formal program in medical assisting accredited by either the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES).
  • Transcript should document training in phlebotomy and performance of electrocardiograms.
  • Certification through The American Association of Medical Assistants or registration through the American Medical Technologists is strongly encouraged and preferred.
  • Basic math skills required.
  • Ability to work with reports and numbers.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one or two-step instructions.
  • Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.
  • Use computer, printer, and software programs necessary to the position (i.e., Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).
  • Ability to utilize Internet for resources.
  • Current State of Texas Driver License or if you live in another state, must be currently licensed in that state.
  • Liability insurance required if employee will operate personal vehicle on Center property or for Center business.
  • Must be insurable by Centers liability carrier if employee operates a Center vehicle or drives personal car on Center business.
  • Must have an acceptable driving record.
  • CPR certification.
  • PMAB certification.
  • SAMA certification.

Nice-to-haves
