As the Knott Dairy Assistant Manager, you report to, assist, and support the Knott Dairy Center (KDC) Manager. In this role, you must be able to fill in and perform the duties of the Manager during their absence. Your responsibilities include assisting the Manager with budget planning and forecasting; scheduling, directing, and supervising personnel resources; and overseeing facilities care for a major dairy herd and production operations, including milking, calving, breeding, nutrition and feeding, health care, forage utilization, pasture grazing schedules, and livestock sales to meet the milk supply needs of the Washington State University (WSU) Creamery. In collaboration with the Manager and other staff, you are responsible for ensuring that the KDC remains a safe, clean, low-stress livestock environment that supports teaching, research, extension, and optimal milk production. Working closely with the Manager, you coordinate resources, time, facilities, communication, and organizational needs to support multiple and simultaneous uses for teaching, research, and extension. You may teach classes and facilitate research and data collection as assigned by the departmental chair. You play a critical role in implementing the dairy’s animal care and nutrient management plans, training new staff and student employees, and serving as an important representative of the Department of Animal Sciences and WSU to the dairy industry.
