About The Position

The Valley Shore YMCA is seeking a dependable, attentive, and service-oriented Assistant Lifeguard to support our mission of strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. This role helps maintain a safe, welcoming, and positive aquatic environment for all members and guests. The Assistant Lifeguard supports the Aquatics team by assisting with pool surveillance, enforcing safety rules, and responding appropriately to situations under the direction of a certified Lifeguard. This position helps ensure a clean and safe pool area while providing excellent customer service, and all interactions reflect the YMCA’s core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. Requirements

• Minimum age of 16.
• Certifications: 1. Current YMCA Lifeguard certification or equivalent. 2. Current CPR, First Aid, EOA, and AED certifications are required within 30 days of hire.
• Skills and Experience: 1. Demonstrated ability to maintain the physical and mental readiness required for lifeguarding duties.
• Must successfully demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
• Strong people skills with the ability to connect and communicate effectively with diverse individuals and groups across all social and economic backgrounds.
• Understanding of inclusion and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Responsibilities

• Assist the Supervisor by maintaining continuous observation of the pool and deck areas at all times, ensuring continuous scanning under the supervision of the lead lifeguard.
• Reinforces and promotes adherence to all aquatic safety rules with YMCA policies and Valley Shore’s YMCA guidelines, modeling safe behavior and addressing concerns promptly.
• Understands the YMCA’s “Safe-in-Six” model (Prevent, Recognize, Activate EAP, Rescue, Emergency Care, Report) and assists the primary lifeguard during emergencies by providing support within assigned responsibilities.
• Builds and sustains positive, professional relationships with members, participants, and fellow staff.
• Conducts routine checks of aquatic equipment, restocking and organizing materials as needed, and reports any hazards, maintenance issues, or missing items to the lifeguard on duty.
• Performs basic water chemical tests when assigned, accurately recording readings and reporting any concerns or abnormalities to the supervising lifeguard.
• Helps maintain the cleanliness and orderliness of the pool deck, guard stations, equipment storage areas, and surrounding spaces.
• Assists with swimming programs, classes, and special events by preparing materials, helping organize participants, and supporting instructors as needed.
• Maintains all required certifications and actively participates in mandatory staff meetings and in-service training sessions.
• Performs additional tasks and projects assigned.
