About The Position

Summary: The Department of Physical & Environmental Sciences at Colorado Mesa University invites applications for an Assistant Instructor for its summer geoscience field camp. This position serves as a secondary instructor, working closely with a faculty lead to support instruction, supervision, and daily field operations. The role focuses on applied, field-based teaching, with emphasis on developing student competencies in geologic mapping, structural interpretation, and field data collection.

Requirements

  • M.S. in Geosciences (completed) or Ph.D. candidate (ABD)
  • Demonstrated field experience (e.g., geologic mapping, structural geology)
  • Some teaching or instructional experience, preferably in field settings

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in geoscience field camps (as student, TA, or instructor)
  • Strong background in structural geology and/or sedimentary systems
  • Experience working in team-based instructional environments
  • Familiarity with field safety practices and risk management

Responsibilities

  • Assist the faculty lead in delivering daily field instruction
  • Support teaching of: Geologic mapping techniques Structural measurements and interpretation Field data collection and notebook documentation
  • Provide direct guidance and feedback to students in the field
  • Supervise students and ensure adherence to field safety protocols
  • Assist with logistics, transportation coordination, and daily planning
  • Contribute to evaluation and grading of student fieldwork
