The Assistant Habilitation Specialist assists with the operation of the classroom. This role is responsible for ensuring that all unit activities enhance and support each person’s social responsibility, independence, dignity, and continued growth. The specialist will implement goals designed to maximize each participant’s level of independence, as determined by the IDT. In addition to providing training in activities of daily living, the Assistant Habilitation Specialist may be required to perform these activities for individuals requiring total support, such as shaving, toileting, hand washing, and toothbrushing. The position involves monitoring participants’ progress by collecting and documenting performance data, serving as a positive role model, and providing behavioral interventions following OPWDD approved techniques. The specialist must successfully complete and perform techniques required in AMAP, SCIP, CPR, and First Aid, and implement established activity schedules. They must also understand and be able to complete all required paperwork in the absence of the Habilitation Specialist, with direct support from the Supervising Habilitation Specialist. Maintaining a clean, safe, stimulating, and appropriately decorated unit is also a key responsibility. Supervision of participant’s lunch periods, including feeding and assisting with food items, and participation in various appointments (medical, psychiatric) for assigned participants are also required. Confidentiality must be maintained at all times. Caseload and location are subject to change.
