About The Position

This position is located at 101 E. 15th St., Austin, TX in the General Counsel department. You must be a Texas resident to work for the Texas Workforce Commission or willing to relocate to Texas. A graduate from an accredited law school approved by the American Bar Association who has been admitted to the State Bar of Texas and has two to three years of experience in the full-time practice of law, or two to three years of full-time experience in a responsible position involving legal work as a primary duty. The Assistant General Counsel (General Counsel I-II) performs moderately complex to complex (journey-level) legal work. Works under general supervision, with limited to moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Requirements

  • General Counsel I: Graduation from an accredited law school approved by the American Bar Association and admission to the State Bar of Texas plus two years of experience in the full-time practice of law, or two years of full-time experience in a responsible position involving legal work as a primary duty.
  • General Counsel II: Graduation from an accredited law school approved by the American Bar Association and admission to the State Bar of Texas plus three years of experience in the full-time practice of law, or three years of full-time experience in a responsible position involving legal work as a primary duty.

Nice To Haves

  • Excellent oral and written skills; have two to three years' experience in legal work involving governmental policy, administrative law, administrative hearings; have experience in legal work with governmental policies providing guidance and briefing on federal and state laws.

Responsibilities

  • Perform extensive research and writing on state and federal matters before the Commission.
  • Provide input on the development of agency programs and the establishment of agency procedures.
  • Draft rules, evaluate legislation and perform complex legal work related to administrative law and agency programs.
  • Represent the agency at administrative hearings involving agency programs.
  • Provide legal advice to TWC representative in meetings with clients, staff and the public.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
