About The Position

The Assistant Football Coach & Defensive Coordinator is responsible for coordinating and directing all aspects of the defensive unit for the Texas A&M University-Texarkana football program. This position assists the Head Football Coach in building and maintaining a competitive NCAA Division II football program through effective coaching, recruiting, player development, game preparation, and adherence to University, Lone Star Conference, and NCAA rules and regulations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience coaching football at the collegiate or high school level.
  • Knowledge of defensive football schemes and techniques.
  • Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations, or ability to obtain such knowledge within 30 days of employment.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to travel extensively and work beyond normal business hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and uphold professional and ethical standards.
  • State of Texas or Arkansas class "C" vehicle operator's license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment, including an acceptable driving record and periodic completion of van safety course, as required.
  • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Working in all weather conditions, exposure to high noise levels, standing throughout the day, the ability to use a loud voice at practices and events and physical involvement in all practices and workouts with players.
  • This position may be required to handle Protected Health Information (PHI) as defined by Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations, in accordance with System policy and is further required to complete FERPA and HIPAA training as a condition of employment, within a reasonable timeframe after employment and on an as-needed basis thereafter.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • Collegiate coaching experience, preferably at the NCAA Division II level or higher.
  • Experience as a defensive coordinator or primary defensive play caller.
  • Proven recruiting success and player development experience.
  • CPR Certification

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate, develop, and implement the overall defensive philosophy and strategy for the football program.
  • Plan, organize, and conduct defensive meetings, practices, drills, and game preparation.
  • Call defensive plays during games and make in-game adjustments as needed.
  • Coach and mentor assigned position groups, focusing on skill development, discipline, and performance.
  • Assist the Head Football Coach in the overall administration and operation of the football program.
  • Recruit qualified prospective student-athletes in compliance with NCAA Division II, Lone Star Conference, and university regulations.
  • Evaluate prospective student-athletes through film review, on-campus visits, and off-campus recruiting activities.
  • Support the academic success, personal development, and retention of student-athletes.
  • Assist with scouting opponents, film breakdown, game planning, and analytical evaluation.
  • Collaborate with strength and conditioning staff on year-round development programs for defensive players.
  • Promote a positive, disciplined, and inclusive team culture aligned with university values.
  • Assist with equipment management, travel planning, and logistical coordination as assigned.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, compliance education, and professional development activities.
  • Represent the football program and university positively at camps, clinics, community events, and fundraising activities.
  • Assist in transportation of athletes to/from athletic events, which may include driving a full-size passenger van or other large capacity vehicle.
