About The Position

The City of Saint Charles Human Resources Department is currently recruiting for the position of Assistant Fire Marshal. The purpose of this position is to conduct fire safety inspections, plan reviews, code enforcement activities, fire investigations and community risk reduction/public education duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Vocational or technical training in fire codes, building codes, code enforcement, building inspections, building trades or related areas.
  • Three years of inspection experience in fire prevention and regulation using the ICC codes and referenced standards.
  • Certified as a Fire Inspector I by the Missouri State Division of Fire Safety or ICC within 12 months of hire.
  • Certified as a Fire Inspector II by the Missouri State Division of Fire Safety or ICC within 18 months of hire date.
  • Certified as a Fire Investigator by the Missouri State Division of Fire Safety within 12 months of hire.
  • Certified as an ICC Fire Plans Examiner within 12 months of hire.
  • ICC Commercial Fire Alarm Inspector certification required within 18 months of hire date.
  • ICC Commercial Sprinkler Inspector certification required within 18 months of hire date.
  • Any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • A valid driver's license required.
  • Ability to work under moderately safe and comfortable conditions where exposure to construction site environmental factors such as temperature variations and extremes, toxic agents, noise, machinery, wetness, electrical currents, irate individuals and/or dust, may cause some discomfort and where there is a risk of injury.
  • Ability to calculate percentages, fractions, decimals, volumes, ratios and spatial relationships.
  • Ability to interpret basic descriptive statistical reports.
  • Ability to work under moderately safe and comfortable conditions with occasional exposure to environmental factors such as temperature variations and extremes, toxic agents, irate individuals, electrical currents and/or dust, may cause some discomfort and where there is a risk of minor injury.

Nice To Haves

  • Associates degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in fire science, fire prevention or protection, or a closely related field is highly desirable.
  • Preferred three years of fire plan review experience using the ICC codes and referenced standards.
  • Preferred one year of experience in fire origin and cause investigation.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains an up to date knowledge of fire code regulations, national standards, and best practices.
  • Promotes the City's fire prevention and risk reduction programs through effective code enforcement and education.
  • Conduct comprehensive, technical inspections of buildings and properties to verify that exits, fire protection equipment and systems, building construction, interior finishes and decorations, and occupant load conform with applicable fire safety regulations,
  • Conducts acceptance tests for fire protection equipment, automatic fire sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems and similar devices.
  • Conducts comprehensive inspections of businesses that handle, process, transport, or store hazardous materials to ensure compliance with applicable fire and safety regulations.
  • Inform and advise the general public, contractors, property owners, architects, engineers, developers and others regarding inspection activities, violation correction procedures and fire code standards.
  • Receives and responds to fire code violation complaints ensuring the maintenance of fire safety systems and reduction of nuisance alarms/unnecessary emergency responses.
  • Assists and consults with Building Inspectors and developers as needed regarding fire code compliance.
  • Reviews plans for proposed site developments, building, fire protection systems and equipment, fuel tanks, hazardous materials, etc. to ensure compliance with all fire safety regulations.
  • Monitors fire drills in all required occupancies to ensure proper procedures are followed and are completed with the frequency required by the fire code.
  • Conducts inspections of special events such as exhibits, fairs, conventions, concerts and carnivals.
  • Maintains accurate and thorough records of inspection activities.
  • Performs fire investigations in order to determine fire origin and cause, on an as needed basis. This includes scene processing, interviewing, coordination with law enforcement personnel, preparing investigation reports, and courtroom testimony when necessary.
  • Inspects fireworks stands for compliance with all applicable fire codes.
  • Inspects public fireworks and pyrotechnic displays.
  • Serves as Acting Fire Marshal when the Fire Marshal is absent.
  • Represents the Department at various functions, organizations and community events.
  • Responsible for all equipment issued to them by the City.
  • Responsible to always present a professional appearance and attitude when representing the City.
