About The Position

The Assistant Fire Chief is a member of the command staff and is responsible for providing resources and direction to officers and firefighters in operations, training, suppression, response, technology, scheduling, emergency medical services, and emergency management. The primary position responsibilities and areas of impact are: Develops long and short-term plans to maintain and improve service for the public. Manages staff including work direction, coaching, training, setting performance objectives and measuring outcomes. Manages and develops complex department projects to completion in the areas of training, technology management, emergency management, operations, suppression, emergency medical services, and response. Ensures staff are appropriately cross trained in these areas and tracks completion. Manages various software and technologies for the Fire Department and assists in the development of the fire department budget. Serves as Duty Chief for assigned schedule. Assumes command at major fire scenes and directs the response teams. Serves as liaison between the department and other city leaders during significant incidents. Facilitates significant incident debriefings, identifies areas of improvements and implements subsequent changes. Performs all duties of a Captain and/or Lieutenant. While these areas are the primary focus of this position, we believe strongly in teamwork and employees will be called upon to perform a variety of duties as a part of their role with the City.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree is required.
  • Four-year degree required within four years of appointment is required.
  • Minimum of seven years of experience working with a fire department of a similar size is required.
  • Current Firefighter I and Firefighter II (including Hazardous Materials Operations) certification is required.
  • Current or most recent fire department rank must be a Captain or higher for not less than two years or Lieutenant for not less than three years required.
  • Certified Minnesota State Emergency Medical Technician is required.
  • Local Hazard Zone (Blue Card) Certified within six months of hire is required.
  • Completion of a college accredited Fire Apparatus Operator course (FAO) is required within two years of employment.
  • Experience with computer technology and specialized Fire Department software is required.
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license (must have excellent driving record).
  • Must be able to stand, climb ladders, balance, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl and reach, to walk or run on uneven surfaces, and to drag up to 185 pounds for a distance of 50 feet.
  • There is hearing/listening, seeing/observing, communication, grasping and occasional lifting, pushing or pulling of up to 100 pounds, frequent lifting, pushing or pulling of up to 50 pounds and regular moving of objects up to 20 pounds.
  • Candidates must successfully complete and pass the City’s evaluation of the pre-employment process prior to their first day of employment.
  • Pre-employment processes for this position include professional reference checks, background check, driver’s license check (must have a valid driver’s license and excellent driving record), pre-employment physical exam, physical ability test, work history verification, education verification and leadership evaluation.

Nice To Haves

  • Executive Fire Officer (EFO) or master’s degree is preferred.
  • Certified Emergency Manager is preferred.
  • Training in tactics, building construction, administration, disaster management, and hazardous materials is preferred.
