Under general supervision, the Assistant Engineer (Mechanical) performs engineering work of average difficulty in the field and office, adhering to established engineering methods and procedures. This role involves applying engineering principles and practices to civil, mechanical, electrical, environmental, or transportation engineering problems. This is a citywide exam posting, meaning that successfully passing the exam will place candidates on an eligible list from which various departments within the City and County of San Francisco will hire for open positions in this job classification. Key duties include preparing, reviewing, and checking routine studies, calculations, designs, drawings, sketches, and plans for diverse engineering projects, utilizing tools such as AutoCAD. The position also requires conducting field inspections of existing structures to identify needs for future construction, repair, or maintenance, as well as performing preliminary field studies, surveys, and data collection for design preparation. Furthermore, the Assistant Engineer conducts routine field inspections of ongoing construction and repair projects to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and codes, and records work progress. The role involves gathering, preparing, and maintaining engineering data, records, and reports, and preparing contract specifications, material lists, cost estimates, schedules, and progress payments. The Assistant Engineer also prepares departmental reports on field conditions, project progress, study results, and future development plans, and provides written and oral responses to inquiries from other agencies, contractors, and the general public. There is potential to exercise limited supervision over junior engineers, student engineering trainees, and related personnel. Additional responsibilities include preparing correspondence, minutes, and reports concerning engineering policies, procedures, standards, environmental impact issues, appeals, and other project-related activities, and potentially processing legislation for engineering-related matters. The Assistant Engineer will also meet and consult with professional engineering personnel, contractors, and the public regarding engineering issues.
