About The Position

The Assistant Editor will play an integral role on one of the newsroom’s largest teams, which drives our breaking news coverage. They ensure that our journalism is engaging, timely, accurate, clear, thorough, fair and relevant to a diverse audience. This person must be a versatile player-coach — a journalist who can assign, edit and occasionally report on stories for audio and digital platforms. They will assist the Day-of desk’s role as the final editor for all stories published to the web — ensuring stories adhere to WNYC/Gothamist’s style and our ethical and journalistic standards. The Assistant Editor will also regularly collaborate with other desks and teams on relevant breaking news coverage.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years professional journalism experience, including experience editing and writing on deadline
  • Ability to manage reporters and provide clear, consistent feedback
  • Ability to conceive and execute innovative approaches to storytelling
  • Ability to anticipate reader interests and identify stories that will engage them
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, including the ability to sharpen or rewrite copy with precision under deadline pressure
  • Sophisticated communication skills, including oral, written, and public speaking
  • Deep commitment to accurate, ethical journalism; impeccable journalistic integrity and judgment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of complex social, political, and cultural issues
  • Self-starter with proven ability to meet deadlines and pay close attention to detail and fact-checking
  • Ability to manage several projects concurrently
  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to contribute an equity lens to every aspect of people development and management processes, and ability to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion competency in newsrooms

Responsibilities

  • Evangelize and uphold the strategic vision and goals for the Day-of desk
  • Take on editing assignments from the Editor of the Day-of desk
  • Create journalism that engages loyal and diverse audiences on digital, audio, and social platforms
  • Adhere to the highest journalistic standards, from breaking news to longform features
  • Help coach reporters on the desk through pitches and edits
  • Assist the Day-of Editor in daily and long-term planning
  • Collaborate with reporters and editors across the newsroom on coverage
  • Foster a culture of accountability, creativity and innovation in storytelling
