About The Position

This posting is for an Engineer I position that will serve as an Assistant District Engineer for the Aberdeen District 2 Office, including Hoke, Lee, Moore, Richmond, and Scotland Counties. The mission of the NC Department of Transportation is to connect people, products and places safely and efficiently with customer focus, accountability, and environmental sensitivity to enhance the economy and vitality of North Carolina. The work not only serves the citizens of North Carolina but has an impact on the world through all modes of transportation. The position will supervise lower-level Technicians, coordinate reviews of technical plans and drawings related to driveway permit applications, utility encroachment requests, subdivision design standards, road additions, and purchase order contracts. It also involves researching right of way (deeds and plats) and performing other duties as assigned by the District Engineer.

Requirements

  • Considerable knowledge of the principals and practices of civil engineering
  • Considerable knowledge of highway maintenance and construction methods, techniques, and the use and operation of field and office engineering instruments
  • Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, provisions, specifications, policies, procedures, and regulations
  • Ability to plan, organize, and schedule highway maintenance operations
  • Ability to make independent decisions
  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers, departmental personnel, contractors, developers; local, state, and public officials, and the general public
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills to ensure permits, agreements, and projects are completed accurately and in a timely manner
  • Must be able to legally operate a state vehicle
  • Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors

Nice To Haves

  • Computer experience including office software and drafting software
  • Experience applying engineering concepts to solve basic engineering problems
  • Knowledge of engineering standards, policies and procedures related to transportation
  • Experience in customer service related to resolving problems that involves explaining complicated engineering concepts to various customer groups
  • Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision
