This posting is for an Engineer I position that will function as the Assistant District Engineer for Division 9, District 1 Construction Office in Rowan County. Position is primarily responsible for the coordination, review, and approval of technical plans and drawings relating to driveway permit applications, utility encroachment requests/agreements, subdivision design plans and standard and process for road additions. Position will be responsible for the supervision of subordinate employees. Position will perform field inspections and prepare deficiency letters as it relates to road additions and onsite inspections for compliance with NCDOT specifications for driveway permits, encroachments, and subdivisions. This position will also work closely with the construction staff to administer and manage construction projects. Other duties will include but are not limited to performing project field inspections, preparing monthly/final pay estimates, creating, reviewing, and evaluating supplemental agreements and claims, ensuring compliance with both NCDOT and external environmental agency erosion control and permit requirements, resolving constructability issues, and serving as DOT project representative for formal and informal meetings with contractors, utilities, local officials, media, and the public. Must have the ability to make independent decisions using sound engineering judgement. Ability to read and interpret construction plans, provisions, specifications, policies, procedures, and regulations. The selected applicant should have experience using computers and electronic tablets, with SharePoint and HiCAMS experience preferred. Will be expected to implement Department safety standards and program guidelines to daily activities. May be exposed to hazards including construction equipment, high traffic volumes, and heights over water or traffic, and will be expected to work outside in varying temperature and weather conditions. Employee will be expected to perform moderate physical activity such as walking, climbing, kneeling, and standing. Position may require working nights and weekends as needed for emergency and planned operations in all types of weather conditions and on uneven surfaces and slopes. Safety-toed shoes required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience applying engineering concepts to solve basic engineering problems.
  • Knowledge of engineering standards, policies and procedures related to transportation.
  • Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision.
  • Experience in customer service related to resolving problems that involve explaining complicated engineering concepts to various customer groups.
  • Computer experience including office software and drafting software.
